Council Briefs: Grants Awarded for Safety Moves

And the council awards a contract for sewer improvements.

What follows is an account of actions taken on Nov. 3 by the Bridgewater Township Council, which, while not breaking news, are still of note.

Township receives child passenger safety grant

The council unanimously approved a resolution to allow for the inclusion of a grant in the budget for the amount of $4,000.

The grant is for a 2011 Child Passenger Safety Grant.

The funds are from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, and will be used for police overtime work to implement public education programs about how to install child safety seats correctly.

Grant included in budget for bulletproof vests

The council unanimously approved a resolution, accepting $2,700 to be included in the budget for a 2011 Bulletproof Vest Partnership.

The police department will be receiving six new vests.

Township receives funding for road construction project

In an effort to continue a project for the reconstruction of Brown Road, the township received a grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation in the amount of $150,000.

According to the resolution, this is a 2010 NJ DOT Municipal Aid Grant.

The money is used for the reconstruction of the road between Washington Valley Road and Papen Road.

According to a note from Natasha Turchan, director of finance, the grant was received in 2010, but the township was not advised of it at the time.

Township awards contract for police vehicles

Because of the need for new police vehicles, the township council unanimously approved a resolution to award a state contract for those vehicles for a total of $57,135.69.

The township is preparing to purchase on Chevrolet Tahoe for $31,387.69 and a Chevrolet Caprice as $25,748.

The funds, according to the resolution, will be available to pay for the vehicles through a safe corridor grant.

The township is also preparing to purchase another four Crown Victoria police vehicles, which will be paid for through .

The state contract for these vehicles will total $118,644.

Contract awarded for sewer improvement project

The council unanimously approved a resolution to award a contract for professional engineering, surveying and inspection services in the amount of $47,100.

The project is for work to be done on the Buena Parkway-Sanitary Sewer and Road Improvements Project for reconstruction of a 700-foot portion of the parkway and extending the township’s sanitary sewer line.

The contract was awarded to Keller & Kirkpatrick, Inc., of Morris Plains.
