Irene: Testing Available for Possibly Contaminated Water

The township offers information for testing water that may have been contaminated by flooding.

The Bridgewater Township Health Department is offering residents the opportunity to purchase their own bacteriological water testing services.

According to a release from the township, flooding conditions can impact water quality by introducing the presence of coliform bacteria into residential well water systems.

The bacteria, according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, can lead to gastrointestinal illness.

Accurate results, according to the release, can be provided within 24 hours of collecting the samples of water.

Residents are also advised to use a volatile organic chemical scan if they have concerns about chemicals in the well water. The test can detect 60 different chemical contaminants, and costs $100.

The samples from this test are checked through a New Jersey certified laboratory.
