Mosque Hearings Postponed Until New Year

Storm and applicant's request cause reshuffling of meeting dates.

The township has canceled a pair of meetings set to rehear the application by Al Falah Center to construct a mosque on Mountain Top Road.

Both the meeting set for 7 p.m. Tuesday and a second hearing set for Dec. 18 have been canceled, with no rescheduled dates set. Tuesday's meeting was cancelled because of the snow, and the Dec. 18 meeting was cancelled at the request of the Al Falah Center, Township Administrator James Naples said.

The hearings will be rescheduled in January after the Planning Board reorganization, set for Jan. 7.

The hearings were ordered by federal judge Michael Shipp, sitting in U.S. District Court in Trenton, after the center sued the township over its earlier denial of the mosque application.

The township is appealing Judge Shipp's ruling, and had asked for a stay on the new Planning Board review pending a decision on its appeal but the stay was refused.
