Celebrating Elizabeth Blackwell during Women's History Month

From our top 'Red Hot Mama', Karen Giblin:

On a personal note, I think one of the greatest women in American history who has shaped our lives and the practice of medicine which should never be forgotten is Elizabeth Blackwell (1821-1910), who was born in England, emigrated with her family to the US in 1832.
Her father passed away leaving her family in poverty.  Elizabeth then taught school in North and South Carolina.  She then studied medicine privately with sympathetic physicians and began seeking admission to medical school.  All leading schools rejected her application.  She finally got admitted in 1847 to Geneva Medical College in Geneva, NY.  While attending school she was ostracized and harassed.  She persevered and graduated in 1849, and ranked first in her class.  Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman in the US to graduate from medical school and the first woman doctor of medicine.

Red Hot Mamas® would love to know who you think is a woman that should be honored and learn more about the fascinating story why this woman has shaped your life.  www.redhotmamas.org
