Bridgewater-Raritan Recognized For Accomplishments in Advanced Placement

The district has made of list of those with an increased number of students earning a 3 on advanced placement tests.

The has been named one of about 400 districts that has improved or maintained the percentage of students earning a score of 3 or higher on its advanced placement exams, according to a release from the district Thursday.

For this honor, and for opening AP classes to a broad pool of students, the district is being honored by the College Board with a placement on its AP Achievement List.

“We’ve made a concerted effort over the past several years to increase the number of students who participate in Advanced Placement courses, believing that the performance of all students would not only be maintained, but would actually improve,” said Superintendent of Schools Michael Schilder in the release.

According to the release, between 2008 and 2010, the district has increased the number of students participating in AP classes from 363 to 448, and the percentage of students achieving at least a 3 on the test has increased from 89 percent to 92 percent.

The College Board list includes a total of 388 school districts that span across 43 states, the release said.

“Participating in college-level AP courses can level the playing field for underserved students, give them the confidence needed to succeed in college, and raise students and performance in key subjects like science and math,” said Gaston Caperton, president of the College Board, in the release. “The AP Achievement List districts are defying expectations by expanding access while enabling their students to maintain or improve their AP exam scores.”

According to the release, there are four criteria for inclusion on the list, namely the examination of three years of data of advanced placement classes and tests; and increase in participation and access to advanced placement by at least 4 percent in large districts, 7 percent in medium ones and 11 percent in small ones; a steady percentage of exams taken by African American, Hispanic/Latino and American Indian/Alask Native students; and performance levels maintained or improved in students earning a 3.
