District Buying Multi-Level Geometry Textbooks

And lunch prices are rising by about 10 cents.

The district is looking ahead to purchasing new geometry textbooks—and this will serve to ensure that not all levels use the same book.

According to board of education member Jill Gladstone, at the May 22 meeting, the district is purchasing the textbooks to replace the current ones, and there will be separate ones for honors and academic classes, and other levels.

The district, Gladstone said, is purchasing the Glencoe book for Honors and Academic levels, and the Pearson book for the Essentials of Geometry classes. These will replace the Discovering Geometry textbooks, she said.

“I think the new textbooks will be much more helpful instead of having one book for all levels,” she said. “Both books are more student-friendly so that students can help themselves at home and parents will be able to help too.”

Board member Jeffrey Brookner said he agrees that the change is important.

“There are reasons to have different levels of classes, and it is not always appropriate to have the same book,” he said. “I applaud the administration and all those involved.”

The board of education also approved several actions at the meeting concerning contracts and lunch prices.

First, the board approved a contract to continue receiving custodial services from Pritchard Industries, Inc. The contract was first awarded May 11, 2010 as another cost-saving measure when the district lost much of its state aid.

The contract has been renewed from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013 for a total of $3,471,091.83.

The board also approved a contract with E.R. Barrett Inc., for partial roof replacement at and . The contract is for $648,550, and is being paid through the capital reserve accounts.

Finally, the board approved the food services management contract, with a small increase in the prices of lunches in all the schools. The contract for school lunches is through Maschio’s Food Services, Inc., for $36,330.

Through the payment of lunches, the district is assuming to get a return of $125,000 for the 2012-2013 school year.

In the primary and intermediate schools, student lunches will cost $2.40. In the middle school, student lunches will cost $2.55, and lunches at the high school will cost $2.70.
