Ex-BRHS Teacher Markiewicz Resigns After Reaching Settlement

Settlement terms leave door open for further action by the board.

After reaching a settlement with the Birdgewater-Raritan Regional Board of Education filed against him, former BRHS band director Larry Markiewicz has resigned, according to an article on NJ.com.

The board had suspended Markiewicz in March following complaints he had harassed students, including one student who reported Markiewicz pressured him when the student wanted to drop from the band to play volleyball.

The board filed tenure charges against Markiewicz, but voted to accept a settlement on Sept. 17. The report notes terms of the settlement include a statement acknowledging the agreement doesn't establish wrongful or improper conduct.

"The parties mutually acknowledge that this matter has been litigated and resolved in good faith, and that this agreement is entered into solely for the purpose of avoiding the time and expense attendant to any further litigation," NJ.com reported the settlement states.

However, the settlement also notes the matter can still be referred to the board of examiners, which can suspend or revoke Markiewicz' teaching certificate.

Markiewicz is a conductor with the Raritan Valley Symphonic Band and the Somerset Valley Orchestra, according to the organizations' websites. He is also listed as the Co-Caption Supervisor of the Cadets2 drum corps and musical director  and conductor of Imperial Brass, a Rutgers alumni brass group.

This article was edited to correct an error in the sport the student charging Markiewicz with harassment wanted to play.
