'Weapons' Rumor Ups Police Presence at High School

Rumors circulated Thursday that there might be a 'weapons event' at the high school Friday.

Police presence was increased at Bridgewater-Raritan High School Friday because of rumors circulating Thursday evening about a possible prank or weapons, according to an email from Superintendent of Schools Michael Schilder.

Schilder said there had been rumors of possibly some kind of prank, weapons or events at the high school Friday, possibly related to Dec. 21 on the Mayan Calendar.

"Administration and police fully investigated all rumors and found none to have merit," he said in the message.

As a precaution, Schilder said, there was a strong police presence on the BRHS campus Friday, but nothing out-of-the-ordinary occurred.

"The Board Facilities Committee will be working with administration, local police and perhaps a security consultant to review current BRRSD security procedures and the many suggestions that have been offered by staff and parents," he said in the message.

Otherwise, Schilder said in the message, it was a calm week.

"Our students and staff handled the tragedy as well as could be expected, and for the most part this was a calm week with everyone returning to their routines," he said.
