Settlement in Case Against Suspended Teacher Pending

Arbitrator expected to make a decision on agreement between school board and Larry Markiewicz.

A settlement in the tenure charges against former teacher Larry Markiewicz is under review by an arbitrator, after the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional Board of Education approved its terms last week.

"The matter is still in the hands of the arbitrator—we should have an answer by the end of the week," Acting Superintendent Cheryl Dyer said Tuesday.

Markiewicz, a band director at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, was suspended in March, with the board approving the tenure charges seeking his dismissal in June, after receiving complaints regarding his treatment of students.

The board met in a lengthy executive session Sept. 16 to discuss the settlement, terms of which are not available.
