Signs Help Students Navigate High School Halls

Getting around James Caldwell High School just got easier thanks to senior Sean Dyer.

Navigating the halls of a local high school just got easier thanks to one artistic student.

Dyer, a senior at James Caldwell High School in West Caldwell, was honored by the Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education Monday night for creating more than 30 signs that have been mounted around the school.

The wooden, hand-painted signs point the way to the main office, the gym, the Center for Performing Arts and other key areas of the sprawling one-level building.

“My mom had said to leave a mark on my high school,” Dyer said Monday after receiving a proclamation from the school board.

He told the public that he always liked art and thought the school could be easier to get around with some strategically placed signs.

The 35 signs are made from wooden floor boards leftover from the gym renovation which took place over the summer. They are painted white and have blue lettering and an image of the Chiefs mascot.

The signs were in place in time for the parent open house earlier this fall.

Dyer lives in West Caldwell with his family. He is the manager/statistician for the Caldwell boys soccer team.

Before the end of the school year, he plans to create murals on canvases that will be placed near the art room, gym and science rooms at Caldwell High.

Terrific idea Sean! I attended my 5th open house @ JCHS back in September and after all these years, I still get lost! I noticed the signs then and they were so helpful in getting me where I needed to go. I am happy to now know how these signs originated! For the next 3 open houses I will attend, I will use them and think of you. Best of luck in college next year and keep up that innovative spirit!
