Students Assisting Nation's 'Wounded Warriors'

A club is raising money to help veterans with an initial fundraiser at Thursday's football game.

Students are doing what they can to help local wounded veterans—and they're hoping a first fundraiser during Thursday's football game against Immaculata High School will be a step in the right direction.

Toward the end of the 2010-2011 school year, students at , under the direction of social studies teacher Matt Apel, began a group called the Wounded Warrior Club.

"We are attempting to raise money to support and help wounded veterans that return from Afghanistan and Iraq," Apel said.

At Thursday's game, the club will be selling t-shirts for $20, and collecting donations.

"We only have a limited number of t-shirts, so hopefully they will sell out," he said. "And our members will be walking around with collection buckets, and we will also have buckets at our tent."

Apel said the organization is designed to raise awareness about wounded veterans and collect money to assist them in what they may need.

"We decided we'd like to start by finding one to two local veterans a year and giving what we can," he said. "The limited response we've had from the school and community has been great so far."
