Students, Teachers Spoof SNL in First-Day Skit

The skit was written and directed by a BRHS senior.

Several students and teachers gave up one of the last days of their summer vacation Monday to spend an afternoon at spoofing Saturday Night Live.

While principal at Egg Harbor Township High School, Brett Charleston used to put together a video for the beginning of school, spoofing a movie and showing it to students and staff as a welcome back.

And now that he is principal at BRHS, Charleston is bringing that tradition with him.

"This is coupled with the opening day message," he said.

This year, Charleston decided on a spoof of a famous Jerry Seinfeld skit on Saturday Night Live, set inside a history class. He brought together administrators with students to put together the skit, which they filmed Monday and which will be shown on the first day of school.

Senior Jacqueline Huettenmoser took on the challenge of writing the skit and directing it.

As a news anchor for BR-TV, and an officer with National Honor Society, she offered to be part after Charleston contacted the NHS advisor for volunteers.

"I volunteered and then requested help from BR-TV," she said.

Huettenmoser said she wrote the script, and assigned roles to each of the administrators taking part, while members of BR-TV ran the cameras and will be helping her with editing the video.

"I adapted the skit from SNL to fit it to the first day of the school," she said. "And I made it about American history."

For Huettenmoser, who has now been both in front of and behind the camera, she said she enjoyed the behind-the-scenes work.

"It was fun to put together," she said. "And it was more fun to direct because this is a funny skit."

Huettenmoser said she had been working on the project since the start of August.

"I think the students will enjoy it," she said. "It's a laid back introduction into the school year."

And Charleston said he is proud of the dedication of the students.

"There is no better experience of students learning than this," he said. "I can't be more impressed."
