Sullivan, Vitello Receive Scholar-Athlete Awards

The awards were presented May 16.

The Somerset County High School Principal’s Association hosted the 2012 Somerset County Interscholastic Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Dinner May 16, with all 16 schools in the county represented.

The two students from presented with the Scholar-Athlete awards were Kayla Sullivan and Salvatore Vitello.

Sullivan, daughter of Mike and Barbara, is a four-year varsity winner in field hockey and lacrosse. Playing defense for both sports, she received all-region team in 2010 and 2011, first team all-conference since her sophomore year, first team all-county since her sophomore year and first team all-state since her sophomore year.

Sullivan was also a county champ and conference champ all four years, as well as the North Jersey Group IV state champion all four years. She attended the Junior Olympics twice, winning the gold medal in 2010.

Aside from sports, Sullivan excelled in school, receiving high honor roll since freshman year. In the fall, she will attend Bucknell University and play field hockey.

Vitello, son of Sal and Lori, earned seven varsity letters in soccer and basketball. As a first team all-state soccer player, he led his team to two Somerset County championships.

In his senior year, Vitello led his team to the Group IV state finals with 33 goals, and was named the Somerset County and Courier News Player of the Year. As the boys’ basketball all-time leader in points—1,258 and 485 assists—he was named first team all-state Group IV and first team all-county. He was also named Star Ledger Player of the Week in both soccer and basketball. 

Vitello is a four-year honor roll student, board member for Student Council and a member of Peer Mediation and The Council for Exceptional Children.  In the fall, Salvatore will attend Pace University and play basketball.
