Ducks Hold Off Patriots in Season's Second Game

Somerset comeback comes up two runs short.

The Long Island Ducks defeated the 6-4 at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday evening.

Long Island took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a two-run double by Brandon Sing and an RBI single by Ryan Garko to finish the rally.

A solo home run by Lew Ford (1) in the top of the fourth added to the lead for the Ducks.

The Patriots answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning after Jesse Hoorelbeke walked and scored on an RBI single by Rex Rundgren to cut the lead to 4-1.

Dan Lyons drove a sacrifice fly to right in the top of the sixth inning to give the Ducks a 5-1 advantage.

Lyons grounded into a fielder’s choice in the eighth to tack on another run for Long Island.

Hoorelbeke blasted a two-run home run (1) over the left field wall to cut the lead to 6-3 in the eighth.

Somerset threatened with the tying run on second in the bottom of the ninth, but failed to bring home more than one run on an RBI single by Rundgren for the 6-4 final.

Long Island starting pitcher Dan Meyer (1-0) picked up the win after allowing a run in five innings. Justin Cassel (0-1) suffered the loss for Somerset after giving up three runs in three innings pitched. Jonathan Meloan picked up his first save of the season.
