Patriots Defeat Blue Crabs in Stoner's Debut on the Mound

Jeff Nettles belts a three-run home run, his sixth of the season, in victory.

Waldorf, Md.–The (32-35) beat the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (30-37) 11-5 Thursday night from Regency Furniture Stadium in the first game of this four game weekend series. Patriots starting pitcher Tobi Stoner earned the victory in his Somerset debut as he tossed five strong innings while striking out nine batters.

In the bottom of the first inning left fielder Brian Barton smashed a solo home run (4) to deep left field to put the Blue Crabs on the scoreboard first as they led 1-0.

The Patriots responded by taking a 3-1 lead in the top half of the third inning. Second baseman Freddie Bynum had a RBI double, first baseman Jeff Nettles had a RBI sacrifice fly and left fielder Aaron Mathews registered a RBI triple.

The Patriots added one more run in the fourth frame as designated hitter Dan Hennigan laced an RBI single to put the Patriots in front by a score of 4-1.

The Blue Crabs tied the game up at 4-4 in the fourth inning as center fielder Jeremy Owens blasted a three run home run (10) to deep left field.

The Patriots regained the lead in the ensuing half inning. Center fielder Joe Holden notched a RBI single and catcher Yusuf Carter hit a two run double to give the Patriots a 7-4 lead.

The Patriots doubled up their lead in sixth as Nettles hit a three-run home run (6) to deep left field.

Somerset added one more in the seventh inning as Carter belted a solo home run (6) to left field making the score 11-4.

The Blue Crabs scored in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch by reliever Josh Rupe to make the score 11-5 which would be the final.

The 2012 Somerset Patriots season will continue on the road until Friday, July 13 when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark to take on the Camden Riversharks at 7:05 p.m. The game features a post-game fireworks show.
