Patriots Sweep Doubleheader

Somerset gets some help in the first contest, break tie in seventh inning in second game.

The swept a double header over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday Night, winning both games 6-5.

Game 1

The Patriots battled back with the help of four errors in the bottom of the ninth inning to score four runs for the win. The winning run scored on an error that followed a game-tying RBI single by Jake Fox.

Southern Maryland scored in the top of the fourth inning after Brian Barton singled and scored on a groundout by Sergio Pedroza.

Somerset tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Joe Holden to make the score 1-1.

The Patriots took the lead the following inning after Dan DeGeorge came around to score on a double by Yunesky Sanchez for the 2-1 advantage.

The Blue Crabs evened the score at two in the top half of the seventh on a solo homerun by Travis Garcia (5).

Southern Maryland rallied to break a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth inning. Pedroza brought home a runner on a sacrifice fly, Richard Mercado drove an RBI single to center, and Richard Giannotti doubled to cap off the scoring and make the score 5-2.

Patriots reliever Chase Wright (4-0) got the win after allowing a run on two hits in an inning of work.  Blue Crabs closer Jim Ed Warden (2-6) suffered the loss, allowing an earned run and three unearned runs in the ninth inning.

Game 2

Somerset rallied to break a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning on a clutch RBI base hit to right field by Sanchez for the 6-5 win.

The Patriots jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after Sanchez drove a two run double to left center and later came around to score on an RBI single by Jonny Tucker.

Southern Maryland cut the lead to one the following inning on a fielder’s choice by Casey Benjamin and an RBI single by Travis Garcia to make the score 3-2.

Somerset tacked on another run in the bottom half of the third after Jake Fox scored on an Adam Donachie RBI single to center field for the 4-2 lead.

The Blue Crabs gained the lead on a three-run home run by Benjamin (11) for a 5-4 advantage.

Jesse Hoorelbeke (14) went deep in the fifth for Somerset to tie the game up at 5-5.

Patriots reliever Andrew Dobies (1-2) got the win after pitching a scoreless seventh inning.  Chris Mobley (3-2) suffered the loss after surrendering the game- winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

The 2012 Somerset Patriots season will continue at home on Saturday night when the Patriots take on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at 7:05 p.m. The game features a post-game fireworks show.
