Skeeters Hold Off Patriots

Late surge not enough to carry Somerset.

The Sugar Land Skeeters defeated the 11-9 at TD Bank Ballpark on Thursday evening.

The Skeeters jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first on an RBI base hit by Steve Moss and a base clearing triple by Aaron Bates for the 4-0 advantage.

Sugar Land tacked on another run in the third on an RBI single by Ofilio Castro to make the score 5-0.

Somerset got on the board in the bottom half of the third inning after Jonny Tucker scored on a base hit by Yunesky Sanchez to cut the lead to 5-1.

The Skeeters answered right back the following inning to score two runs on RBI singles by Bubba Bell and Moss to extend their lead to 7-1.

Sugar Land brought home four more runs in the seventh highlighted by a two run triple by Josh Pressley to make the score 11-1.

Somerset rallied to score four runs in the bottom half of the seventh on an RBI double by Joe Holden, who later scored on a wild pitch, and a two run homerun by Colin Curtis (1) to cut the lead to 11-5.

A solo homerun by Yusuf Carter (12) in the eighth gave the Patriots another run and made the score 11-6.

Corey Smith (8) drove a three run homerun over the left field wall for the Patriots in the bottom of the ninth for the 11-9 final. The Patriots brought the winning run to the plate in the inning.

Kelvin Villa (3-7) got the win for Sugar Land after allowing two runs and striking out 11 batters in six innings of work.  Derell McCall (9-6) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings pitched.  After the Patriots rallied to score three runs in the ninth, Jeff Farnsworth came on to collect his second save of the season.

The 2012 Somerset Patriots Season will continue on the road until Tuesday, September 18th when the Patriots return home to take on the Long Island Ducks at 7:05 pm.  The game features Bark in the Park Night with a chance for all fans to bring their dog to the ballpark.
