Bridgewater Teen Finishes Third in International Fencing Competition

Charlene Liu is currently ranked third in the U.S.

Bridgewater student Charlene Liu, 16, took third place at the the Grenoble Epee Cadet European Cup, held in Grenoble, France, Nov. 23- 24—her first international medal.

Charlene was undefeated in the qualifying rounds. In her first quarterfinal match, she defeated Cristina Spiegelburg, of Switzerland, by a score of 15-8. She then faced Giana Vierheller, of Houston, who was the eventual gold medal winner.

Christina had placed fifth in Austria earlier this fall.

"Charlene’s fantastic and distinguished performance helps to solidify her position on Team USA this year," a statement on Medeo Fencing Club's website said. Te club noted Charlene is currently ranked third in the United States, and the recent competitions show she is poised to win additional medals at world championships in either the individual or team events. "Great job, Charlene! We are very proud of your accomplishments!"
