Bridgewater's Brian Barr Helps Lead Panthers To Conference Title

Bridgewater Patch talked to senior swimmer Brian Barr moments after the boys clinched the Skyland Conference championship Thursday against Montgomery.

Less than a week ago, the boys swimming team clinched the Skyland Conference championship, blowing the competition away with its undefeated conference record.

One of the vital pieces of that team was Brian Barr. Barr, 17, is in his senior year at Bridgewater-Raritan, and Patch spoke with him just minutes after he helped his team to the conference championship.

Bridgewater Patch: What got you into swimming?

Brian Barr: My dad was a swimmer, so ever since I was a little kid I've been doing it. I started on a summer league team, and just went from there.

BP: What's the toughest part about competitive swimming?

BB: Honestly, it's the time dedication. It takes up a big portion of every day. You have to get used to getting to and from practice all the time.

BP: Who would you say your best friend on the team is, and why?

BB: I know it sounds corny, but I would have to say my brother. I've grown up with him and we've gotten along very well.

BP: Do you have any professional athletes or family members whom you look up to?

BB: My dad, honestly.  My dad's always been a big idol.

BP: Do you have any favorite sports teams?

BB: New York Giants all the way!

BP: Do you play any other sports?

BB: I used to play lacrosse, but I quit last year.

BP: You guys won the conference championship. What are the team's goals for the remainder of the season?

BB: We want to come home with a county and state championship. That'd be fantastic. So that's what we're hoping for as of now.

BP: What's the most nervous you've been for a race?

BB: I would honestly have to say last year against Westfield in the state finals for the 400 (-meter) freestyle relay right at the end. I wasn't for myself, but rather for the team.

BP: Do you have any colleges you're planning to apply to, and do you play to swim there?

BB: Yeah, I'm going to Brown University, and I am swimming there.

Brian and his teammates will follow their win with a hopeful success at the county championships in early February.
