Bridgewater's Jesse Novak Named NJAC Rookie of the Week

Grabs share of four first-place finishes to help Rowan swimmers beat Salisbury.

Bridgewater student Jesse Novak, a freshman at Rowan University, was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, after helping the school's men’s swim team defeated Salisbury University, 137-112 on Oct. 22. 

Novak grabbed the top spots in three events—the 50 (21.96), 100 (48.29) freestyles, and the 100 butterfly (54.77). Also, the Rowan medley team—with Novak, seniors Pat Malone and Larry Dow, and sophomore Tyler Coe—won the 200 medley relays with a times of 1:38.73. 

Brad Updegraff (fr. Frederick, MD/Walkersville) swam 2:01.97 in the 200 butterfly for first place. Steven Buzby (fr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) was the winner in the 200 freestyle (1:50.53) and he was second in the 100 free (50.23).

Kyle DeVore (fr. Annapols, MD/South River) came in first in the 1000 freestyle (10:28.70) while Zac Wister (jr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) took first place in the 500 free (5:06.14). In the 100 breastsroke, Mike Simunek (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) was first (1:00.55) followed by Paul Long (fr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee), second (1:02.08) and Patrick Myers (so. Kennett Square, PA/Kennett), third (1:02.94). Myers won the 200 breaststroke (2:21.03). Dow finished second in the 100 backstroke (55.27) and Malone was second in the 200 butterfly (2:02.62). Cervini took second in the 50 free (22.41). Eric Emerson (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) came in third in the 100 backstroke (57.46).
