Hillside Student Gov.'s Special Guest at Giants Rally

Adam Bernstein was promised the tickets at a town hall meeting with Christie.

It was the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl, with the New York Giants down by two and almost four minutes left in the game—but 10-year-old Adam Bernstein, of Bridgewater, was the most nervous of all.

Bernstein was crossing his fingers because if the Giants won the game, there was a chance he would be going to a rally at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, as promised by .

"When it was 15-17, it was a little nerve-wracking because I had the most at stake," he said. "And when they finally got the last touchdown, I got really excited."

"We were at a big Super Bowl party at a friend's house, and when the Giants won, I got thrown up in the air," he added.

Bernstein attended the town hall meeting because he was interested in meeting the governor, his mother, Bonnie, said. But when they arrived, they decided to try and ask something different.

"Me and my dad made a question that was interesting, and what I was most interested in was wanting the Giants to win the Super Bowl," Adam Bernstein said. "We are really big fans."

But, Bernstein said, he could not have expected what happened next.

Bernstein asked Christie if there would be a celebration in New Jersey if the Giants were to win the Super Bowl.

Christie responded that not only would the Giants win, but he would be requesting to do a rally at the MetLife Stadium, and Bernstein was going to be his guest.

"I was stunned because that was really unexpected," Bernstein said. "I was really excited and happy."

And when the Sunday, 21-17, Bernstein waited with baited breath to find out if the governor would stay true to his promise.

Bonnie Bernstein said they really had no way of knowing that this would come through.

"When he was first invited, the reaction was, 'no way,'" she said. "Then the two weeks passed, and then the Giants won the Super Bowl, and the kids were asking if they would get to go."

"But we didn't know until yesterday [Monday] when the governor's office called and said our whole family was invited," she added.

That included invitations for her, her husband, David, and her two other children, 16-year-old Marissa and 13-year-old Ross.

"We are more than thrilled," Bonnie Bernstein said. "We are season ticket holders, and football is a family affair. We go as often as we can."

The rally will be held at the East Rutherford stadium at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Bernstein said she thought it was really interesting initially that her son wanted to attend the town hall meeting, but she couldn't imagine this would be the outcome.

"It was really exciting that he wanted to attend, and he missed school to do that," she said. "But he said he was actually interested in meeting the governor. You don't get to do that every day."

"For the outcome to be this is really exciting for all of us," she added.

Adam Bernstein said that after the Super Bowl, he and his family rushed to Modells to stock up on Super Bowl shirts, sweatshirts, blankets and shot glasses.

And then the phone started ringing off the hook, he said.

"When my friends saw me on the news, they were surprised," he said. "[And after the game], my phone blew up with calls, text messages, emails on Facebook."

"They were more suprised than anything, but they were happy for me," he added.

Bernstein said he never doubted his team, but he also never thought he would get to go to the rally.

"I knew they would win because they're the better team, and they did it last time," he said of the Giants. "[But] I couldn't imagine what would happen."
