Teen 'Own the Night' Summer Reading Club Kicks Off
Psychic gives teens an insight into the powers of the mind.
The Teen Summer Reading Club kicked off Wednesday night with a special look into the psychic world.
Psychic Marc Sky demonstrated his psychic powers and showed more than 30 teens how they, too, had psychic abilities.
“Own the Sky,” the summer reading club for students entering grades 6-12, runs through Sept. 8. By keeping track of how many hours they read over the summer, participants earn raffle tickets, books and other prizes. About 400 teens are currently enrolled.

“I’m excited that, a week and a half in, we’re already at where we were last year,” said Lynn Mazur, young adult librarian. “We’re definitely going to surpass what we did last year.”
In addition to receiving raffle tickets for their reading accomplishments, Mazur noted that, for the first time this year, club members will also receive raffle tickets for attendance at any of the programs scheduled this summer.

That increases their chances to win prizes such as gift cards or the grand prize of a Kindle Touch, Mazur noted.
Sky kicked off the summer program with an interactive explanation of psychic powers. In addition to demonstrating his own abilities, he explained perception and helped the teens understand what their palm lines reveal.
He earned exclamations of “oh, my goodness” when he correctly predicted which of 5 teens would correctly guess the results of all 5 coin tosses. When he identified the words students randomly selected from a book, one member of the audience exclaimed, “How do you do it?”
When it came to the future, Sky instructed the group in how to make a pendulum that could be used to “help develop your intuition,” he said. “Eighty percent of the time you can find missing objects using the pendulum” by asking a series of “yes” or “no” questions.
“Own the Night” is one of three reading clubs sponsored by the library; there is also a “Read with Me” club for birth through kindergarten and the “Dream Big. Read” club for children entering kindergarten through grade five.
Kickoff week continues with the “Howling with the Wolf” program for ages 4 and over Friday, June 29 from 1-2 p.m.
A full slate of summer programs is scheduled for children of all ages and families; several require registration. For details, visit www.sclsnj.org. Registration can be completed online, by phone (908-526-4016, Ext. 126) or in person at the library at 1 Vogt Drive.
