Matheny Students Overcome Obstacles to Reach Graduation Celebration

Ten Matheny students shared a milestone with family and friends.

It may have taken more time and effort for him than for most students, but Samuel Heisler did what countless school graduates do this June when he flipped off his motorboard at his graduation on Tuesday from the Matheny Medical and Educational Center in Peapack & Gladstone. His classmate, Bryan Desatnick of Basking Ridge, is often in a wheelchair, but on Tuesday he slowly walked onstage at Matheny's Shornhorn Arts Center, where the graduation center was held for 10 students in Matheny's Class of 2013.  With assistance, Desatnick also managed to walk to pick up his diploma during a ceremony that mixed tears, smiles, music and pride — and a lot of admiration for the graduates — from their families and others who made their achievement …

Superintendent Search to Begin in August

Sessions with the public will be held in September with an eye toward mid-year start.

The board of education will solicit superintendent candidates starting in August with a goal of hiring a new district leader by Jan. 1.  The eventual hire will replace retiring Superintendent of Schools Michael Schilder, who announced in May that he will be retiring from the district as of August. The board held a special meeting Thursday with Jane Kershner, director of field services for NJ School Boards Association. Kershner will be the lead for the search, representing the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional Board of Education. Aside from putting together the ad that will run in newspapers for a new superintendent, the board determined its timeline, with the hope of having a new superintendent start in the district on or around Jan. 1. Eagle Scout Helps Restore Age-Old Local Cemetery

The Revolutionary-era grave site, Castner-Compton Cemetery, received a much-needed 'makeover' from local Eagle Scout Michael Sheelar.

The seemingly forsaken property in the woods between Vogt Drive and North Bridge Street was all but forgotten about—just a mountainous heap of waist-high brush and trees that were brimming with dense growth. But that was before Boy Scout Michael Sheelar, 17, of Troop 46 from Martinsville, got involved for an Eagle Scout project. The property, which is also the eternal resting place for up to 100 Somerset County residents, is known as Castner-Compton Cemetery. It was largely forgotten until Sheelar teamed up with the Somerset County Historical Society to restore the grounds. “The oldest graves in there are from Revolutionary War veterans,” Sheelar, a junior at the high school, said. “But the cemetery was a mess. There were bushes and plants…

Landscaper Suffers Probable Foot Amputation in Accident

Princeton man's foot was run over while he worked on Candlewick Lane.

A Princeton man suffered a probable foot amputation after it was run over by a car on Candlewick Lane Tuesday, according to a release from the Bridgewater Township Police. Eliezer Cruz, 38, was using a leaf blower on Candlewick Lane around 9:12 a.m. as a Ford F250 driven by Michael Sides of Manville traveled north up the road, police said. Cruz apparently stepped backward onto the street as Sides approached the area, and the vehicle ran over Cruz's left foot, police said. Cruz suffered what would probably be an amputation of his foot, the release said. Responding to the scene were the Somerset MICU, as well as Green Knoll Fire Department and North Branch Fire Department. Cruz was taken to the Somerset Airport by the Martinsville Rescue …

2 Plead Guilty to Bridgewater Burglary to Avoid Trial

Three men were accused of stealing jewelry and causing property damage on Hodge Drive.

A Teaneck man and his nephew pleaded guilty Monday to a Hodge Drive home burglary in 2011. Jason Mikell, 43, and his nephew, Diandre Mikell, 26, both of Teaneck, admitted to causing property damage and stealing jewelry when they allegedly burglarized the home on April 4, 2011, according to NJ.com. The Mikells and a third man, Jerry Montgomery, 32, of Teaneck, were stopped driving in Green Brook and arrested after being forced out of their car by police. Montgomery was also indicted on burglary charges in April 2013 for his alleged involvement in the so-called "James Bond Gang," targeting homes in the Sussex County area to burglarize. Montgomery's case for the Bridgewater burglary is heading to trial, NJ.com reported. At the same time of …

Dog Park Surveying Ongoing at Darby Tract

Bridgewater council stresses no decision has been made to build a dog park.

Although both residents and officials have said in past years that they are not sure a dog park is absolutely necessary at the Darby Tract off Van Holten Road, one resident has reported that the work appears to be moving forward anyway. A presentation was initially made to the public May 2, 2011, on the proposal for the Darby Tract that would include a dog park and some trail networks. The original plans called for a parking area adjacent to Van Holten Road, with an entrance immediately opposite the entrance to the primary school. The parking would be on the southwesterly corner of the tract, with the entrance to the trails and a dog park on the easterly end. It was also to include a dog park split into two parts, each 100 feet by 150 feet…
