Radon Tests Completed With No Concerns

And the BOE discusses adding a librarian at the high school.

The district has completed radon testing after some parents expressed concerns—and it was determined that all buildings are safe. Board of education vice president Patrick Breslin announced at the May 8 meeting that a total of 900 tests were done throughout the district to ensure that all buildings are safe. “This is the first time this has been done in five years or more, but we did the testing to assuage anyone’s concerns,” he said. “There are no state requirements to do these at any interval.” With the first tests done, Breslin said, all but three came back without any concerns. “But those three were retested, and they came back with no concern,” he said. “It was 900 tests and 900 results back below the state level of concern.” In …

Manager Provides Special Lift for Baseball Team

Jack Esposito inspires Panthers to be the best.

Bridgewater-Raritan High School student Jack Esposito has been a fixture on the baseball team for three years—and he brings luck to the boys each year. Esposito, who has fragile-X syndrome, is the manager of the team, and serves as the bat boy. He is at every game, and provides support to his teammates. Esposito has also competed in the Special Olympics for the past two years. Members of the team said they enjoy having Esposito on the team, and feel like something is missing when he is not with the team.

Board to Hold Dress Code Talk in September

The recommendation from the high school is to leave the code as is.

Discussions are still being held about what to do concerning a dress code for students and staff at Bridgewater-Raritan High School and the rest of the district—but the official word from high school principal Lew Ludwig is to just have better enforcement. “This is for student and staff dress code, and the policy committee felt that it could be a lengthy discussion and possible a hot topic,” said board member Daniel Petrozelli at the May 8 meeting. “Do we really want to go with a full dress code, do we do it grade by grade, school by school or at the district level?” Superintendent of  Schools Michael Schilder said a report from the high school concluded that the current dress code should remain in place and it should not be changed, but …

Before asking the teachers to do more, how about resolving the pay issue first. If they are going to feel slighted by the outcome of negotiations, do you really think they are going to worry about enforcing a dress code regarding what a kids t-shirt says? I am also against uniforms. Kids use fashion to help express themselves and by taking that away, it takes away part of their identity. Let them…   more ›

Debate Continues Over Payment of Hazardous Busing

Moench votes against paying for hazardous busing.

The council approved a resolution May 7 to provide the funds for hazardous busing for students in the district in the 2011-2012 school year—despite concerns from councilman Matthew Moench that the costs should be paid by the district instead. “We can’t wash our hands of it, and punt it to the school board?” he asked. “How is this the township’s responsibility?” The resolution authorizes the township to pay $275,751 for hazardous busing needed this school year to take students safely to schools in the district in the cases when it is too dangerous for students to walk. The cost for the 2010-2011 school year was about $279,000, and the cost in the 2011-2012 school year was about $272,000. Hazardous busing stems off of courtesy busing …

“We can’t wash our hands of it, and punt it to the school board?” he [Moench] asked. So this has nothing to do with saving the taxpayers any money. If Moench were to succeed, the taxpayers would just be taking the same money out of their right pocket instead of their left. Doesn't the council have anything better to do?   more ›

VIDEO: Panthers Youth Stengthens Baseball Team

Limited varsity experience doesn't stop Panthers from success.

Although the 2012 Bridgewater-Raritan High School baseball team has limited varsity experience, the team is not letting it stop a solid season.  Returning only three varsity players from the 2011 team, the Panthers have a group loaded with underclassmen ready to step up and perform.  Heading into the Somerset County tournament semi-finals Saturday at TD Bank Ballpark, the Panthers boast a 7-1 winning streak that comes at the right time of the season.  Now 11-8, Bridgewater seems destined for some post-season play this year, and a future with seasoned varsity players.

Panthers Baseball Continues Winning Streak

Late game heroics seal victory against Hillsborough for surging Panthers.

The Bridgewater-Raritan High School baseball team played host to Hillsborough Thursday, and, after falling behind 2-0, the Panthers broke out in the 5th inning to score three and top it off with the game-winner in the 6th inning, defeating the visitor 4-3. IN SHORT With solid pitching from sophomore James Graziani, the Panthers stayed in the game until the bats came alive. In the fifth inning, taking advantage of two errors and two hits, the Panthers took a 3-2 lead. Capitalizing on another error, a stolen base and a single, the Panthers scored the fourth, and game-winning, run. PANTHER OF THE GAME James Graziani—In his first varsity win on two starts, reliever Graziani held the Raiders to five hits in five innings.  "I got the start today…

I don't know one teacher complaining in front of children. Quite the contrary!!! My students are constantly complaining about what they "use to have" compared to now. Of course they are looking for the material things. It breaks my heart that I cannot afford to bring them all of the extras I spent my own money on. After all, you can't squeeze blood from a rock.   more ›

Teachers Receive Grants at Annual Gala

And Pierce Frauenheim receives the award for volunteerism.

It was a night of honoring teachers going above and beyond as the Education Foundation of Bridgewater-Raritan held its annual gala to hand out grants Thursday. With a 50s theme bringing out the poodle skirts and Cadillac cars, teachers and administrators participated in a tricky tray, enjoyed desserts, listened to the music of the Bridgewater-Raritan High School Glee Club and honored teachers. The foundation gives out grants to teachers who apply, and it is specifically designed for creative and innovative projects for which the district cannot provide the funds. The funds are raised by the staff themselves. The prizes for the tricky tray were donated by both staff members and outside businesses, as was the food. And the Leonard and Adele …
