The 185-acre North Branch Park, which was acquired by the township in 1961, fronts the north branch of the Raritan…More River for about a mile and is within its flood plain. Home to such birds as egrets and waterfowl, the park has a bounty of native plants and wildflowers and is a place where walkers, hikers, birdwatchers, fishermen and photographers can enjoy nature.
The park offers fishing in the Raritan River and opportunities to play softball and soccer, work with horses and use model rockets in specially designated areas. The park also has picnic grounds and therapeutic recreation opportunities for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
The park, which is the location of the Somerset County Park Commission administrative offices, also serves as the site for many different annual events. Among them are the Somerset County 4-H Fair, dog shows, circuses, bicycle races and the annual countywide Independence Day celebration.
