The Brahma House, part of the Somerset Home for Temporarily Displaced Children, provides services for those ages 13…More to 18 through a short-term residential crisis intervention program to provide them with food, clothing, counseling, health care, education and independent-living skills. The house serves more than 100 youth each year who are victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, abandonment or other family crises. The purpose of the program is to help the teenagers deal with their family situations and reunite them together, or find alternate stable housing.
The Brahma House is licensed as a 12-bed group home and a 4-bed shelter, and accepts both referrals from the state child welfare agency and walk-ins. The program also offers individual, group and family counseling, while residents attend either their current schools or the Brahma House Transitional Learning Center where they can receive individual instruction and daily evaluations of progress.
The house has also started a street outreach program, called STREET S.M.A.R.T (Somerset Mobile Adolescent Resource Team) that has been funded by a grant from the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The program targets those between the ages of 13 and 21 who are living in unsafe environments. The team's goals are to provide them with food, clothing and blankets as well as easy access to such programs as the Brahma House, while also providing crisis counseling, providing educational assessments and offering health-related services, among other opportunities.
