Two women dead after vehicle left roadway, crashed into trees along I-78 in Bernards, police say.
Two women were killed when the vehicle they were in ran off the roadway and struck trees on Interstate 78 in Bernards Township early Thursday morning, State Police said. Tonya Gordon, 44, of Somerville, and Natasha Melendez, 20, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to State Police Sgt. Adam Grossman. State Police did not immediately know where Melendez resided. According to Grossman, Davante Gordon, 20, of Somerville, was driving westbound when he lost control of his Nissan Maxima, near mile marker 33.8, ran off the left side of the road and hit two trees at about 2:30 a.m. According to Grossman, the front-seat passenger, Melendez, was ejected from the car. If you are upset with the response utility companies have provided post-Hurricane Sandy, it appears you're not alone. Somerset County Freeholder Mark Caliguire criticized JCP&L's response to the storm in the northern part of the county, calling it "abysmal" in a press release issued on Tuesday. The company's coverage area in Somerset County includes customers in Bernards, Bernardsville, Bedminster, Branchburg, Bridgewater, Far Hills, Green Brook, Hillsborough, Peapack-Gladstone, Warren and Watchung. As of about 11:42 a.m. on Thursday, 10,894 customers were still listed as being without power in the county. Accident occurred on eastbound lanes in Bernards Township late Saturday night.
Alcohol may have been a factor in one-car crash that resulted in two people needing to be airlifted from the scene on Interstate 78 in Bernards Township late Saturday night, State Police said. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known Sunday morning. According to State Police, the driver of the vehicle lost control in the left lane of eastbound lanes of the highway and struck the guardrail on the right side of the roadway at about 11:40 p.m. The car then came to a stop on the left side of the highway in the grass median, State Police said. The two occupants were airlifted to Morristown Medical Center. No further information was available Sunday morning. Patch will continue to update this story.
