Sandy Victims Benefit from B-REA Donation

Students around the district are collecting items for those in need in the tri-state area.

The Bridgewater-Raritan Education Association is sponsoring a New Jersey school district, sending needed items to a community that was displaced by Superstorm Sandy. According to Tara Hueston, fifth grade teacher at Hillside Intermediate School, the association chose to sponsor Lavallette after some members said the school district there was displaced for the remainder of the year. “They had lost everything,” she said. “I found Lavallette, which they’re now learning at St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church in Toms River, on Facebook, reached out to them, told them we wanted to help, set up a donation collection time period and sent out a couple of e-blasts and a district email.” “The rest is history,” she added. Hueston said they just …

Teachers Contract Ratified, Sides 'Move Forward'

Salary increases will total 8.7 percent over the life of the agreement.

It’s official—the Bridgewater-Raritan Education Association (B-REA) and the board of education have a new contract. The new agreement will extend through June 2015, and provides for salary increases of 8.7 percent over four years. Board president Evan Lerner announced at Monday’s meeting that the B-REA had ratified two new collective bargaining agreements, formally adopting the tentative agreement reached by the two parties in August. The B-REA had been without a contract since the last one expired in June 2011. Lerner explained that there are actually two separate agreements in order to extend the contract over a four-year period, from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2015. While salary increases over the four-year period will total 8.7 …

Teachers Contract Nears Ratification, Officials Say

With salary guides nearly complete, BOE president 'hopeful we will be at 100 percent resolved soon.'

With a tentative contract settlement in place, the Bridgewater-Raritan Education Association and board of education are waiting on completed salary guides before moving forward. Board of education president Evan Lerner said at Tuesday’s board of education meeting that they are currently in the process of completing the salary guides, which are drawn up by the union. “We review them and come to an agreement on that,” he said. “There are very small language issues, but we are pretty much done with that.” Once the guides are completed, Lerner said, they will move on to ratification by the B-REA, and then ratification by the board of education. “Everything is moving forward,” he said. “We are hopeful we will be 100 percent resolved soon.” A …

Teacher Contract Details Still Being Finalized

The next step in the process is finalizing salary guides.

Now that a contract agreement has been settled, salary guides have to be developed before the Bridgewater-Raritan Education Association can have a ratification meeting. “We won’t have a ratification meeting until we have salary guides developed and the specific contract language written that we are asking them to review and approve,” said B-REA president Steve Beatty. On Aug. 16, the B-REA and board of education announced that they had reached a contract settlement, more than a year after the teacher contract expired in June 2011. And so far at this point, Beatty said, they have put together a memorandum of agreement based on the recent meetings with the fact finder that finally resulted in a contract. “It is a document that was written by…

No Progress Yet in Negotiation Fact Finding

The BOE and B-REA will hold another session in August.

Resident Urges BOE: ‘Do What You Can’ to Settle

Board, teachers moving toward fact-finding.

As the board of education and the teachers move closer to a July 26 fact-finding meeting, one resident appealed to the board to “please do what you can” to settle the contract    The Bridgewater-Raritan Education Association has been without a contract for 18 months. Informal talks yielded no results and the two groups are scheduled for a fact-finding session next month. While teachers and residents have crowded previous board meetings, Tuesday night’s board meeting drew only a handful of attendees. Benjamin Jones, a 31-year township resident told the board, “The difference between a good district and a great district is morale. Our students deserve the best.” “The thing that keeps the property values up is the school district," Jones said…

Again BR - you're asking the taxpayers to subsidize the Teachers for some increased costs. They are asking more than the State average. No one gives me extra money to pay for my health care costs. Why then, should I be forced into subsidizing some one elses health care costs? "Barry? Are these teachers being too greedy? They teach your children." Once again, using our children against us. This is…   more ›
