About 120 Million Tons Still in Quarry, Officials Say

Stavola Construction will continue work at the quarry on Chimney Rock Road.

With only 3.12 million tons of stone generated this year, and another about 120 million tons to go, representatives from Stavola Construction Materials are expecting to be in Bridgewater for many years to come. The council unanimously approved a resolution recently to grant a continued license to the company for work at the Stavola Quarry on Chimney Rock Road in 2013. “We own the 400-acre quarry,” said Thomas Branch, president of engineering and regulations for Stavola. “Our requirement is to appear before the council and present mining plans for 2013.” “The plans put together each year allow you as a governing body to understand what the plans are for the upcoming year, and what has been done in the past year,” he added. Driver Was Drunk When SUV Flipped, Cops Say

Chimney Rock Road crash caused the passenger to be partially ejected from vehicle.

The driver involved in Friday morning's crash on Chimney Rock Road that sent the passenger to the hospital with internal injuries has been charged with driving while intoxicated in the accident, police said. Shipman Kahanu, 27, of Pennsylvania, was charged with driving while intoxicated and other motor vehicle offenses in the accident that occurred around 12:30 a.m. Friday. "Additional charges may be forthcoming," Bridgewater Township Police Sgt. Gregory Duane said Monday. According to police, Kahanu was traveling north on Chimney Rock Road at about 12:40 a.m. when he began to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle then began to yaw, causing it to change the direction in which it was facing, and it headed off the roadway to the right. …

Passenger Partially Ejected in Chimney Rock Crash

The passenger was not wearing a seat belt when driver lost control and SUV flipped, police said.

Both occupants had to be extricated from a vehicle early Friday morning when a Dodge Durango turned onto its side after the driver lost control on Chimney Rock Road. According to Bridgewater Township Police, the driver, who has not been identified, was traveling north on Chimney Rock Road at about 12:40 a.m. when he began to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle then began to yaw, causing it to change the direction in which it was facing, and it headed off the roadway to the right. From there, police said, the vehicle traveled up a steep incline, which acted as a ramp, and the vehicle overturned onto its driver side as it reentered the roadway. Officials Break Ground on Interchange

It is at the corner of Route 22 and Chimney Rock Road.

Federal, state, county and municipal officials ceremonially broke ground Monday for the Route 22/Chimney Rock Road Interchange project. The ceremony was hosted by the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders, led by Freeholder Director Patricia Walsh. Other speakers included Rep. Leonard Lance, Sen. Christopher “Kip” Bateman, Freeholder Deputy Director Peter S. Palmer, the board’s liaison to the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority [NJTPA]; Bridgewater Township Mayor Daniel Hayes and New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) District Manager Joseph Birchenough. “If you’ve ever driven this part of Route 22, you know why this interchange project is vital to motorists, businesses and residents,” Walsh said in a release on …
