Solar Panels Restored on EEC, First County Building With Them

Ribbon cutting for new solar installation after 20 years.

When the Somerset County Park Commission's Environmental Education Center was built in Basking Ridge in 1976, it was one of the first educational buildings in the nation to have solar panels as one of the primary features. On Thursday, Somerset County officials gathered outside the building for an official ribbon cutting on a new solar installation that will keep the wooded EEC building current for today's solar technology. "It's particularly fitting that we're unveiling solar panels here at the  Environmental Education Center, which was one of the first educational facilities in the U.S. to feature solar panels back in the 1970s," said freeholder Patricia Walsh, park commission liaison. "..the county is calling a "taxpayer-neutral" initiative..." Just plain silly. Solar panels are uneconomical: the only thing that makes them 'neutral' for the county are my state and federal tax subsidies. When does this lunacy end. Park Commission Preparing for Eco-Rally

The effort is to save energy and reduce the carbon footprint.

The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center is organizing its fifth annual Eco-Rally to continue efforts to save energy and reduce the carbon footprint. According to a release from the commission, between April 1 and April 15, those participating in the rally will begin keeping a daily log of everyday tasks they do that reduce energy and promote greener lifestyles. Such actions, the release said, could include turning off lights when leaving a room, walking instead of driving, using reusable bags when shopping, planting a native tree or carrying lunch in a reusable container. Those participating in the rally, the release said, are also being asked to create a display of images that represent their contributions to …

County Puts Own Mark on 'Amazing Race' With Caper

Families and friends are invited to take part in the County Caper.

Sometimes there's just not enough days in the week, but every Wednesday we'll give you an idea of something to do to relax, spend time with family and just take some time for yourself. And this weekend is a whole two days of fun as the Environmental Education Center, on Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge, holds its two County Caper events Saturday and Sunday. County Caper is a two-day game that allows for families and friends to embark on an interactive tour of Somerset County parks and facilities in a local version of “The Amazing Race.” In the game, teams will be sent to various destinations throughout the county, and they will perform tasks, find clues and gather information at each location. All December is 'Frost Fest' at Environmental Center

Somerset County center welcomes winter with a full schedule of programs.

All of December will be "Frost Fest" at Somerset County's Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge, kicking off with a dog-sledding demonstration on Dec. 3. Naturalists at the center, part of the Somerset County Park Commission, will lead the series of programs for both children and adults that will be part of "Frost Fest 2011." The program celebrates the winter season in New Jersey and beyond. Visitors to the EEC, located at 190 Lord Stirling Road, are invited to discover a world of winter fun indoors and out throughout the month. The dogsled demo, which also was held last December, is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Dec. 3.
