Several students recently signed letters of intent to play field hockey in the coming school year. On Feb. 6, Bridgewater-Raritan High School students Christen Piersanti and Rachel Yaney signed their letters of intent to play field hockey at Monmouth University and Rutgers University, respectively. Student Dayle Paustian, who will be attending West Chester University, and Catherine Caro, who will be attending Princeton University, have committed to playing field hockey at their respective universities. All four girls have been an integral part of the success of the Bridgewater-Raritan High School Field Hockey program. They want to bring canned food to the Somerset County food bank.
As people continue to recover from Hurricane Sandy, dealing with no power and a lack of supplies, some local students are taking the time to give back to their communities. Members of the Bridgewater-Raritan High School and Hillsborough High School field hockey teams, in connection with the Bridgewater-Raritan girls and boys soccer teams, will be collecting canned food at all their Tuesday games to donate to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County. The team is walking to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
The Bridgewater-Raritan High School field hockey team each year plays for a different foundation—and this year, the girls are giving their all for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The team will be participating in the organization’s Central New Jersey Walk to benefit the organization Sept. 30. For Christen Piersanti, senior goalie on the team, this cause is especially meaningful, and she will be walking for her aunt, Lori Tovarlaza-Pultorak, who died earlier this year. “I believe it is important to teach the young women of Bridgewater-Raritan field hockey and lacrosse about the importance of giving back to society,” said Kathie DeBonis, coach of the field hockey team. It is an effort to promote the sport of field hockey, and it is coming to Bridgewater for four free clinics. According to Peter Alvarez, a board member with the American Field Hockey Foundation [AFHF], the organization is looking to expand the game at a grass roots level. “More children need to be exposed to this game at an earlier age, and the AFHF works in conjunction with USA Field Hockey to organize and run free clinics to promote the sport of field hockey,” he said. The Spirit Eagles U19 field hockey team entered the 2012 Disney Field Hockey Showcase, one of the primary college showcase tournaments in the country, with great expectations, and proved those to be correct. The tournament is a national draw with well over 100 teams of young athletes looking to be recruited by NCAA coaches. Both Bridgewater-Raritan High School and The Pingry School were well represented in this Spirit Eagles team that emerged undefeated in eight games, winning the gold medal. Kayla Sullivan and Taylor Mygatt are signed to play college field hockey.
Bridgewater-Raritan seniors Kayla Sullivan and Taylor Mygatt have each been signed to play field hockey in Fall 2012 at the college level. According to Kathie DeBonis, varsity field hockey and lacrosse coach at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, the girls were signed Wednesday on National Signing Day. Sullivan, DeBonis said, will attend Bucknell University, joining the Bucknell Bison field hockey team. This past seaon, Sullivan, who has not yet chosen a major, was named first team All Skyland, 1st Team All County, 1st Team All North Jersey and 1st Team Group 4 All-State, and she was a member of the Panthers field hockey team's defense. Junior Dayle Paustian overcomes disability to be star field hockey player.
She was born deaf and wears cochlear implants in both ears—but that does not stop 16-year-old Dayle Paustian from excelling both on the Bridgewater-Raritan High School field hockey team and in her outside committments. Paustian has sensorineural deafness, which she said means the hair cells in her cochlea are completely shattered. "My parents did not know I was deaf until I was 3 years old," she said. "They had me using hearing aids, but they were not benefiting me whatsoever." Despite attending both Bridgewater schools and the Summit Speech School to work on her language for five years, Paustian said, she was not communicating well with others and did poorly in her lessons. Panthers lose for the seventh straight year against the 13-time defending champions.
TOMS RIVER—Bridgewater-Raritan head field hockey coach Kathie DeBonis has led her team to the NJSIAA Group IV final for the last seven years of her 16-year tenure with the program. While it took 10 seasons for DeBonis to reach the first championship game with the Panthers, it has taken almost as many attempts to win the first one thanks to the juggernaut that has been on the other side of the field each time. Familiar foe Eastern awaits Panthers in championship game.
It was business as usual for the Bridgewater-Raritan High School field hockey team on Thursday. The Panthers defeated Hunterdon Central 4-1 at Governor Livingston High School to advance to the Group IV state championship game. Bridgewater will play on Sunday rival Eastern, which the team has played in the last seven championship games. In a game that was close throughout, the Panthers were able to separate from Hunterdon Central in the second half. Bridgewater-Raritan defeats previously unbeaten Bernards.
In a 4-1 victory, the Bridgewater-Raritan High School field hockey team defeated Bernards to capture the Somerset County Tournament championship Saturday at Mount Saint Mary's Academy. At the end of the game, senior forward Christine Germaske, who had a goal and two assists, was named the most valuable player of the championship game.
