Hillsborough to play for county championship for the 11th time in the last 12 years.
Bridgewater-Raritan girls will have to settle for being the second best softball team in Somerset County after losing the tournament semifinal Saturday 8-0 to Hillsborough. Hillsborough got off to a solid start when pitcher Alexis Schengrund struck out the side in the first inning. Schengrund's teammates did their part and put up 4 runs in the same inning, putting Bridgewater on their heels. But Bridgewater looked like they were up to the task when they loaded the bases with one out in the second inning. But the Panthers were unable to capitalize and failed to score. Franklin High School Sweeps at major track competition held at Hillsborough High School.
An estimated 650 or more students that are part of boys and girls track teams from high schools throughout the county came together for Tuesday's Somerset County Championships held at Hillsborough High School. The students participated in 15 events that included running, jumping and throwing, starting after school and continuing until the skies got dark. About 1,500 attended. Coming out on top of the boys and girls rankings were the teams from Franklin with the highest ranking Patch town Hillsborough, which captured a second for the girls and fourth for the boys. 2009 champ Meb Keflezighi motivates, provides training tips to Hillsborough athletes.
It was, as Kurt Vonnegut would say, a strange collision of time and space, Hillsborough High School English teacher and runner Alyssia Puma said. During a training workout along the Charles River the day before this year's Boston Marathon, Puma ran past Meb Keflezighi, the 2009 ING New York Marathon champion and 2004 Olympic silver medalist. "As we made eye contact, I thought, 'is that Meb Keflezighi?'" Puma said. "Without skipping a beat, he smiled and waved. I took that as an invitation to join him running." The several-minute exchange between the two netted Puma his e-mail address, and, for members of the Hillsborough High School and Middle School cross country teams, a chance to meet Keflezighi.
