The play will be performed Thursday and Friday.

The Hillside Intermediate School Theatre Club will be holding its production of "Alice in Wonderland" at the school Thursday and Friday. The play will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in the school's all-purpose room. This will be the school's annual spring play. It is through a partnership between The Jointure and Adult School of the Chathams, Madison and Florham Park.

With a partnership between The Jointure and the Adult School of the Chathams, Madison and Florham Park, a total of 35 adult classes are coming to Bridgewater-Raritan schools. According to Charlene Peterson—director of the Adult School of the Chathams, Madison and Florham Park—this is a pilot program with classes being offered at the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School and Hillside Intermediate School, with computer classes, Spanish, photography, cake decorating, yoga, tai chi, cardio boot camp, grant-writing, jewelry making, crochet and watercolor painting, among others. The Jointure, Peterson said, has been providing educational opportunities in Somerset County since 1914. “In recent years, the impact of the economy and changes in adult …

Martin Luther King Honored By Bridgewater Students

Fifth- and sixth-graders volunteer to perform activities in the area.

Students from the Hillside Intermediate School donated their time and creative talents to others as part of their celebration of Martin Luther King's birthday.  About 100 fifth- and sixth-grade students volunteered to do a number of activities throughout the Bridgewater area.  While some of the students were bussed to the Agape House, Avalon Assisted Living and the Pregnancy Center, still others worked on Hillside Habitats. Another group of about 50 performers gave a Variety Show at Chelsea Assisted Living.  The show at Chelsea Assisted Living culminated in a birthday celebration for 100-year-old resident Thelma Stukes, who marched with Dr. King in 1963.

MLK Day of Service Scaled Back, Not Canceled

Hillside Intermediate will hold its Martin Luther King Day of Service on Saturday.

With a professional development day of planning lost to Superstorm Sandy, there will be no additional programs as part of the Hillside Intermediate School Martin Luther King Day of Service—but that doesn’t mean the show won’t go on. The program, this year, will actually be held Jan. 19 because of that lost professional day, rather than on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, according to Katrina Macht, teacher at Hillside who runs the service day through the Roots & Shoots Program. “Consequently, it is a slightly scaled-back event,” she said. “We will be visiting many of the same agencies, but not all of the agencies were able to accommodate us on a Saturday.” Still, Macht said, there will be many opportunities for the students to do good for the …

Hillside Teachers Celebrate End of School in Tradition

Teachers wave goodbye to students as they leave on the last day of school.

Tuesday was the last day of school for all students in the district—and Hillside Intermediate School teachers celebrated in their own special way. According to Hillside teacher Katrina Macht, teachers at the school mark the end of the last day of the school year every June by standing outside and waving as the buses pull away. Many teachers hold up signs wishing students a good summer. Check out these photos of the Hillside teachers saying goodbye to their students. How do you celebrate the last day of school?

Letters to the Editor

Student: Siberian Tigers in Danger of Extinction

This will cause food chain problems, among others.

To the Editor: Did you know that Siberian tigers are in danger of becoming extinct? Siberian tigers’ habitats are disappearing, and because of that they need to be protected. Since that is happening, Siberian tigers are in danger of becoming extinct. If Siberian tigers are extinct, then their disappearance will disrupt the food web. The world is becoming over-populated with Siberian tigers’ prey [musk deer, wild pig and more]. Siberian tigers are also losing their homes from humans. To help Siberian tigers from going extinct, the World Wildlife Fund [WWF] needs people to participate in their adopt-a-tiger program.   In the wild, there are only about 350 adult tigers left. Two hundred-thirty of the 350 [90 percent] of the Siberian tigers …

Drama Returns to Intermediate Schools

Hillside continues its drama club, Eisenhower brings it back.

One school is having its first play a year after the program was eliminated in budget cuts, and one is proud to continue its tradition of a play a year—but for students and staff at both Eisenhower and Hillside intermediate schools, they are proud of the work they have accomplished. “The opportunity to have the play is missed when it is not there,” said Hillside teacher Katrina Macht, who works behind the scenes on the play. When the district was forced to deal with budget cuts several years ago, the drama program, and other extracurricular activities, at the intermediate schools were eliminated. At Hillside, Macht, her husband Timothy and others who worked on the play opted to go another route to ensure they could continue to offer the …

District Considers Relocating Special Ed Students

The move would not be made if IEPs say it is wrong for students.

With the decision to move the AI program from Adamsville Primary to Hamilton Primary, the district is continuing to look into options for redistricting if needed—and the next idea being explored is to move some special education students. Superintendent of Schools Michael Schilder said during Tuesday’s board of education meeting that they are looking at the possibility of taking about six third-graders at Hamilton and moving them to Hillside Intermediate in fourth grade, a year early. But, Schilder emphasized throughout the evening, this idea would not have been considered had the idea of redistricting not already been on the table. “There are benefits of doing this, but would we be thinking along these lines without redistricting?” he …

I second this! Yes, they are looking at the number of children who will be affected. Those 6 kids should NOT be moved. As a special educator, I will endorse the defense that this move will be far more detrimental than a move for a full classroom of general education students. I cannot see the benefit to moving these younger kids who have special needs to a population of older kids. These parents …   more ›

Hillside Students Show Compassion on Service Day

Students participated in a day of service as part of Roots and Shoots.

For the students at Hillside Intermediate School, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday is not just a day off from school—it is a day to perform service for others. Students participated in their Martin Luther King Day of Service in January as part of the school’s Roots and Shoots program—and they shared their experiences at the March 27 board of education meeting. Among the different programs during the day of service were painting a mural at the Agape House in Somerville, doing an art project at the Avalon Assisted Living in Bridgewater, cleaning up the gardens in the Meadows and Trails at the school and putting together a video about children in Africa. “We cleaned up the gardens and created microhabitats,” said student Hannah Roberts, who…
