Councilman Shows Support for Lonegan Senate Campaign

Matthew Moench encourages residents to vote for the Republican in October.

To the Editor: Mayor Steve Lonegan has been a strong conservative voice throughout our state, standing up for the principles of small government, lower taxes and individual freedom. As the former mayor of Bogota, Mayor Lonegan understands firsthand the concerns that residents in New Jersey face. Mayor Lonegan was also able to win election in a democratic town that voted for President Barack Obama by over 60 percent in 2008. Mayor Lonegan was able to succeed by staying true to Republican principles.  I am confident that if we send him to Washington, Mayor Lonegan will continue his hard work for the residents of our state. In Bridgewater, I have consistently voted to reduce spending and to stand up for conservative principles. I know that …

Students Encourage People to Keep Oceans Clean

He says trash at the beach is becoming a big problem.

To the Editor: Don't you love going to the beach and hoping to have a good time? Well, on most beaches, trash is building and it is not a good thing. Ocean pollution is a global problem. It causes hundreds of marine animals to die each year. Every citizen needs to be responsible for cleaning up beaches and river banks so we can have joyful, family times. As well as oceans, rivers and lakes are polluted too. I go camping every year, and the banks are littered with trash. Our campsite sometimes has plastic bottles and wrappers on the ground. Styrofoam is building up on the banks. The Great Lakes, which hold over 20 percent of the world’s fresh water, are becoming a place to dump garbage. This pollutes the water for humans, and the thousands …

Student: Renewable Energy Should Replace Oil.

And, he says, oil spills need to be prevented.

To the Editor: Imagine a world where our clean waters no longer exist, where the beaches and marine life are gone. Unless we solve marine oil spills with alternative energy, this will happen sooner than you think. Oil spills affect all marine life, but by using alternative energy we can prevent this from happening. Oil spills affect every marine habitat and marine animal. If people don’t take action, sharks, marine birdlife and fish/shellfish, plus all marine habitats, will be gone. Hopefully we prevent enough oil spills to make sure they don’t destroy more biomes.   Oil spills don’t affect a specific species of marine animals, they affect all marine life. Oil can kill animals that don’t even come in contact with it. For example, oil gets …

Student Encourages Helping Puppies

She speaks out against puppy mills.

To the Editor: You’ve heard that dogs are man’s best friend. So why do men hurt them? Everyday, thousands of puppies are born around the world in puppy mills with birth defects and diseases. You’ve probably heard of a puppy mill on the news, and feel bad for a second, but it is most likely you will go back to whatever you’re doing. But we need to help these defenseless creatures. It’s as simple as that. Some reasons are that the puppies die almost as soon as the owner gets them. Another is that the mothers of these pups are forced to get pregnant and give birth until they can’t anymore. Lastly, the puppies are mistreated. Allow me to further explain this. There are filthy conditions in puppy mills. In these conditions, puppies are prone to…

Millions of cows, pigs and chickens being raised on factory farms have it just as bad as the dogs in puppy mills. That some consider dogs to be family members and pigs to be food, should make no difference in how these animals are treated prior to slaughter. Those who love dogs should consider the plight of the animals that they themselves eat. At least the puppies in puppy mills may become …   more ›

Animal Testing Should be Stopped, Student Says

He says it is an inhumane practice.

To the Editor: Depressed, trapped, lifeless—test needles in their skin every day. That’s an animal’s daily life when it is stuck in research laboratories of companies such as Johnson and Johnson, Bayer AG and Chattem Inc. You may know animals have tests happen to them every day and they are almost never safe. One of the obvious problems animals are facing is animal testing and, as we know, it needs to be stopped! We can all come together and realize the problems of animal life, safety and health. These are important factors in all of the animals’ lifetime because they are what keep animals alive. Though we probably all agree animals should be safe, I do accept counter arguments on why they should not be safe and live fine. People say the …

Thank you, Dylan, for writing such a thoughtful letter about animal testing. Many places have stopped using animals as experimental tools, and instead use tissue samples, mechanical models, and other methods that don't involve animals. Those who continue to rely on vivisection (use of live animals as test subjects) say that it's necessary because animals are so similar to humans. But they say it'…   more ›

Gun Permit Information Should be Available, Man Says

One man was denied information on gun permits because of state statute.

To the Editor: For decades now, from time to time, someone with a firearm seems to step out of the crowd and begins shooting down innocent people for no apparent reason—not that any reason would ever justify an act of carnage the likes of which we have come to be witness to as of late.   It always seems to me that society is always better at looking back at these incidents rather than looking forward at them, analyzing what has happened rather than heading them off.   And for all the efforts we do make in deconstructing these sort of events to try to know what might have been going through the minds of these very bad actors, and what set them off, one thing remains a constant factor—firearms.   When it comes to building in Bridgewater, …

Judge Robert Bork said, "I'm not an expert on the Second Amendment, but its intent was to guarantee the right of states to form militia, not for individuals to bear arms." In the same lecture, he added that "assault weapons could be banned under the Constitution," and that other restrictions on guns were constitutional. In 1991, he went at the gun rights' lobby: "[T]he National Rifle Association …   more ›

Donations Still Welcome for Pregnancy Aid Center

The township will be collecting through next week.

To the Editor: I would like to thank those members of the community who have already given so generously to the charity drive to benefit the Raritan Pregnancy Aid and Information Center, and to remind the public that there is still time to drop off donations at the Bridgewater Township Clerk’s Office.  We will be accepting donations through next week, however, anyone interested in supporting this organization can certainly make donations directly to the Raritan Pregnancy Aid and Information Center any time throughout the year.  The center opened 30 years ago, and is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to helping pregnant women. For three decades, the center has tirelessly served Bridgewater, Raritan and surrounding communities, …

Resident: Rejection of Shared Court Service Was Failure

She calls the move "alarming."

To the Editor: At their Nov. 29 meeting, the all-Republican Bridgewater council took an alarming stance against saving Bridgewater taxpayers' dollars through a sensible shared services agreement with Somerville. The majority vote essentially undid efforts to create a shared municipal court system which would have netted a total tax savings if $73,000—with specifically $47,000 for Bridgewater.  The proposal followed the state's model for sharing courts, with each retaining its separate identity, but sharing personnel, space and records storage.  Bridgewater would continue to conduct court in the same manner—with no slowdown in service to residents.  Although the savings may seem minimal in comparison to our approximate $38.5 million budget…

Ms. Wellman, a couple of things I think you overlooked. My understanding of the amount that the Mayor proposed saving was more in line with $36,000, which equals 0.18% of the budget, or $1.80 per household. However, this number didn't include other hidden costs, and there was substantial liability risks to the town. I think Bridgewater was taking over Somerville's employees directly, so if any of…   more ›

Former BOE Member Thanks Community for Support

Cindy Cullen did not get re-elected for a new term.

To the Editor: Congratulations to Patrick Breslin, Jacqueline Barlow and Aaron Kurdyla on winning seats on the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District (BRRSD) Board of Education (BOE). Additionally, I would like to thank the community of Bridgewater for giving me the opportunity to serve for 10 years on the BRRSD BOE. While there is always room for improvement, the board has accomplished much in the last several years. A few examples include: Thank you to everyone who supported me over the years. I consider it a highlight of my life to have had the opportunity to serve the community via the BOE.  If you have an interest in public service, consider BRRSD and the BOE. There are opportunities to be involved at the schools, on district …

More Crossing Guards Needed for School, Parent Says

Local parent sends a letter to local officials about adding crossing guards to prevent other students from getting hit by cars in the future.

To the Editor: How sad that one of our students was struck by a car this morning right in front of the high school and many students.  I am writing to please ask that you place a Bridgewater PD officer or crossing guard at the high school to direct and control the traffic each morning between 6:35 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. on Garretson Road.  I am a mother of a junior at the high school. I drive my daughter to school each morning, arriving between 6:45 a.m. and 6:50 a.m. I can tell you that I am not surprised at all that a child was hit by a car this morning. The amount of traffic and the speed that some cars are driving at is frightening. The addition of the arriving school buses also contributes to limited visibility in the area.   Many many …
