Slippery conditions and fallen trees slowed firefighting work Wednesday evening.
The Martinsville Volunteer Fire Company responded to a structure fire on Woodland Terrace Wednesday evening—but with snow falling heavily throughout the township, that was no easy ordeal. According to Bill Rose, with the fire company, a call came in to the department around 8:30 p.m. about a structure fire caused by a generator. He said the owner of the home had placed a plastic shed between his generator and the house—the shed caught on fire, and set the siding on the house on fire as well. But with about 8 inches of snow having already fallen in Martinsville at that point, Rose said, even the four-wheel drive on the department's vehicle had trouble navigating. Once they arrived near the scene, Rose said, the firefighters were unable to …

Fire companies and rescue squads hit the ground running during Irene.
It is a year since Hurricane Irene battered the area, flooding roads, knocking down trees and cutting power to thousands—and fortunately most of the clean-ups are complete in Bridgewater. Bill Rose, with the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department, said there are no continuing clean-ups in Martinsville after firefighters spent days mitigating last year. “We were pumping out cellars, fixing exposed roads,” he said. “There are no roads closed at this point, and we continue to maintain the equipment necessary for that [kind of clean-up].” Rose said the department got more pumps last year, which helped the firefighters when they had to pump out flooded basements. “It proved a great benefit to us,” he said. “We continue to be equipped to handle …

Summer and the Fourth of July mean grilling, barbecuing and having parties outside to celebrate the warmer weather. But grilling and other similar activities are not without their certain dangers, particularly in the warm summer months. And Bridgewater firefighters are offering some safety tips for having fun in the sun. “The first thing is that every so often it is a rainy day, but propane and charcoal barbecues can only be used outside,” said Bill Rose, of the Martinsville Fire Department. “There is a fire hazard, and they can potentially trap gasses and carbon monoxide.” For Stephen Cornella, former fire chief of the Country Hills Fire Department, it is important to read the manuals themselves. “You’d be surprised by how many questions …

And they say this kind of call is not common.
Though considered a highly unusual circumstance, the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Company was called out Sunday evening to help a 6-year-old child who had gotten stuck in a tree outside a Brookside Avenue home. While all parties were brought down safely, Bill Rose, with the fire company, said these kinds of calls are not frequent. "This is actually the first time we have been called for something like this," he said, adding that having to get cats out of trees is actually more common. "In my memory, I do not recall us ever responding to a call like this and do not remember hearing about another fire department, in the area, having a response like this." Rose said that, basically, a child had climbed a tree in her backyard, but was too …

I hope my post was not taken the wrong way. I have the utmost respect for the Martinsville Fire Dept and all of our first responders in the area. They put their lives on the line every day. Poles and wires have been down on our block since the storm hit last Monday night. Our Local fire dept was put in harms way that evening because of downed poles and wires left over from the storm, coupled with…   more ›
