Juvenile Struck by Vehicle Tops News in April

Cars fires and school report cards also top the month in Bridgewater news.

A juvenile was hit by a car in the left lane of Route 22 West just pass the Route 202/206 overpass Monday morning. Students have been arriving to Eisenhower Intermediate earlier than teachers say to arrive for extra help—and they are not being allowed in the building. Three cars were destroyed after they were fully engulfed in a fire in the parking lot on Corporate Bouelvard.  A Brahma Avenue house was declared not livable after it caught fire from possibly being struck by lighting one evening early in the month. Two cars were destroyed by a fire that occurred in the parking lot of the Bridgewater Commons Mall near California Pizza Kitchen. Teacher Suspension, Facebook Fight Page Top March News

A fatal Route 22 collision and a case of measles also top the month in news.

Band teacher Larry Markiewicz was suspended with pay at the beginning of March, pending further review and consideration by the superintendent. A car accident on Route 22 on the last day of February killed a Bound Brook resident and shut down Route 22 West for about four hours. A case of measles was definitely confirmed in the county, and two others were being investigated in mid-March. The district is continuing to investigate "BRHS Fights," a Facebook page posted on the social media site, which had videos of fights at the high school. A home on Bayberry Road was gutted by a fire that took two hours to break down in the early morning hours of a Monday in early March. A fatal motor vehicle accident shut down one lane of Route 22 West near Adamsville Road on the final day of the month. The Bridgewater Commons Mall is planning an expansion of at least 13,000 square feet to its main property, with plans to bring in a new restaurant. With an expansion planned at the Bridgewater Commons Mall, we asked residents what they think should open there. A car overturned deep in the woods off Route 22, but the driver extricated himself and his dog. Frank Chiaravalli, a former math teacher and supervisor at the high school, died in late January. A Warren woman was charged with vehicular homicide after causing a crash in Bernards Township that killed a Bridgewater man. A funeral was held at Blessed Sacrament Church for Bridgewater resident Peter Calvelli, who was killed in a motor vehicle accident in Bernards Township. A Hunterdon County man was killed after his vehicle went off the road and hit a concrete bridge support on Route 22 in Bridgewater. The Warren woman who was charged with vehicular homicide in the death of a Bridgewater man allegedly had an open container of alcohol in her vehicle, police said. School security, Route 22 upgrades top the month in news.

A Bridgewater family drove to Newtown, CT, to provide support, love and donated food and toys for families grieving after the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Hoboken resident Ryan Lanza was wrongly accused of being the murderer in Newtown, CT, before it was determined that the crime was actually committed by his brother, Adam. A section of Route 22 was shot down when a dump truck overturned and started spilling fuel into the roadway in early December. Many stores throughout the township were extending their hours to allow for extra shopping on the day after Christmas.  Ryan Lanza told friends early on Dec. 14 that he was not the shooter in the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.  A man carrying firearms was …

Top Bridgewater Stories in November

Sandy's aftermath and recovery dominate news last month.

About 760 JCP&L customers were restored with power about a week after the storm, with more than 1,100 still suffering in the dark by Nov. 5. At some point, more than a week after the hurricane, JCP&L said it was increasing manpower to help restore most of the remaining power outages. Polling locations had to be changed at the last minute because of continued power outages after the hurricane. We tracked the reopening of stores and businesses after the hurricane. The governor started a gas rationing system in 12 counties after the hurricane to combat long lines at gas stations. A 19-year-old Elizabeth man drowned in the Raritan River after a joke with a friend, and being revived for a few hours by Bridgewater Township Police. A 44-year-old Martinsville man was found to have been growing more than 30 marijuana plants in his home and a nearby park, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office. The 19-year-old Elizabeth man was originally revived when he was pulled from the Raritan River just west of Milltown Road July 22, but died later that evening at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
