Township Improving Communication for Major Storms

And information is being provided on the website about power outages.

Exactly one year after a freak October snowstorm hit the area, the township is moving forward by reflecting on the past and preparing for the future. New Jersey was hit with a snowstorm just before Halloween in 2011, with massive snowfall, trees falling from the weight and other unforeseen issues. “The township has taken steps to improve emergency communication both during and after an event of magnitude,” Mayor Dan Hayes said. Among the steps taken, Hayes said, is that the police department will increase information to residents through reverse 911 phone calls, increased web notices and emails. “And I have met with representatives of the local power utilities and created a link on the homepage of the township website, which indicates the …

Kudos to Mayor Dan Hayes, Jim Naples, and staff on much better communication this storm. Even though it is a very difficult time for everyone, it is comforting to hear from our local leaders, and know they are on the job. Just posting info, sending notes has a positive impact as we sit in our cold, dark houses! Thanks again Bridgewater staff. And always thanks to the EMS and Fire fighters...   more ›

Hurricane Sandy May Test Utilities' Preparations

JCP&L instituted new communications, repair plans after last year's major storms—will it be enough?

Two months after New Jersey residents recovered from flooding and damage caused by 2011's Hurricane Irene, the area was hit with a severe winter storm. The storm's snowfall piled more than a foot deep in many areas, and the heavy, wet precipitation snapped tree limbs and utility poles, causing massive power outages that in some cases took a week to repair. And on the anniversary of that storm, New Jersey is facing a potentially more dangerous storm: Hurricane Sandy, which has already claimed lives in the Carribean and is currently forecast to reach the area Monday morning—just in time to collide with a possible winter storm. Keeping a close eye on the storms are meteorologists with JCP&L, which says employees have already been put on alert…

JCP&L to Invest $200 Million for Improvements

Utility company serves 13 counties in New Jersey.

Jersey Central Power & Light announced a plan to invest $200 million in 2012 on projects the utility company said are "designed to improve service reliability and help meet the increasing demand for electricity in northern and central New Jersey." Donald Lynch, president of JCP&L, said Tuesday morning the investment includes the completion of several new substations, including in Andover Township in Sussex County, and in Tewksbury in Hunterdon County, as well as a $2 million investment to upgrade more than 40 distribution circuits within JCP&L's New Jersey service area, which includes 236 municipalities. "The substantial investments we plan to make this year and in the future are part of JCP&L’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of …

Township: 'Freak' Snowstorms Don't Come Often

The township will appropriate its normal amount of money for storm clean-up in 2012.

Despite an unusual year that brought both a tropical storm and a snowstorm in October, officials say Bridgewater is in fine shape with equipment and materials to deal with a hopefully normal 2012. According to township adminstrator Robert Bogart, 2011 was unusual in its number of snowstorms, plus the two freak storms in the latter half of the year. And the township can never predict that that will happen, he said. "Irene and an October snowstorm don't come along every year, and we normally wouldn't budget for something like that," he said. "With these lean years, we are unlikely to budget for one coming up because we would not anticipate it." And for that reason, Bogart said, the township had to move forward with emergency appropriations …

The title of this article is priceless (next: 'a donut without a hole is a danish')...Audrey is great (no sarcasm...for once; the woman works 24/7). Anyway, other things to consider: (1) Salary the workers and don't pay overtime (most Bridgewater residents [fortunate enough to have a job] never get overtime), (2) what about years with LESS than anticipated expenses...where do the savings go? (3) …   more ›

Township Plans Additional Brush Cleanup

The administration is cleaning remaining brush that fell during Irene and the snowstorm.

Clean-up is continuing after Tropical Storm Irene in August and the snowstorm in October dumped branches and debris in the roads all over the township—and officials are taking steps to complete the cleanup within the next week. The township approved a resolution Monday that will transfer about $50,000 into a fund for street and road clean-ups in sections of Bridgewater. The money is from other accounts where it has been unused, and is part of a larger end-of-the-year transfer to move funds in the budget where they are needed. According to township administrator Robert Bogart, Bridgewater has a day-by-day schedule of areas in town for clean-up, with the schedule continuing through Thursday. The work is being done by outside contractors for …

Poll: Are You Satisfied With the Storm Response?

Considering all the factors involved in getting town back up and running, what's your opinion?

It was a historic storm, causing numerous road closures, power outages, and uncountable downed trees and large limbs throughout the area. It also played havoc with Halloween festivities and trick-or-treating. Measureable snowfall doesn't normally arrive in October, but when it does the combination of fall foliage and heavy, wet snow is a recipe for what residents experienced beginning this past Saturday. So, as the cleanup and repair process continues, how satisfied have you been with the response? Did officials, authorities, public workers, and the electric companies do everything in their power to mitigate what proved to be a destructive storm? Are they continuing to do so? Let us know what you think in our poll. Then, let us know why …

Several residents would could have easily moved some fallen branches out of the roadway did not. I'm not talking about giant limbs, I'm referring to the little stuff. Also, the decimated DPW is not picking up or moving deer carcasses or branches in the street for days or weeks.   more ›
