New Pope Francis Elected: Bishop Reacts

he white smoke appeared on Wednesday, signalling that the conclave had chosen Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio to be the new head of the Catholic Church.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, former cardinal of Argentina, was elected pope Wednesday. The first South American pope, and the first to be elected outside Europe in more than 1,000 years, he will now be known as Pope Francis. "Our new Holy Father is known for his humility, simple lifestyle and commitment to social justice, much like the patron saint he named himself after, St. Francis of Assisi of Italy," said Rev. Paul Bootkoski, Bishop of the Diocese of Metuchen in a statement. "I am confident that he will prove to be a worthy successor to Peter, our first pope, and to our most recent pope, Benedict XVI, who is to be admired for his leadership of the past eight years." Pope Renouncing Office is Teachable Moment, Bridgewater Monsignor Says

Monsignor Joseph Celano said it is a chance to understand the workings of the church.

As Monsignor Joseph Celano, of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church on Route 22, fields questions from congregants concerning the recent announcement that Pope Benedict XVI will step down at the end of the month, he said it will serve as a teachable moment about the workings of the church. “The congregation was pretty well stunned,” he said. “But we can take advantage of this teachable moment, and help people understand the workings of the church.” The next question, Celano said, is what the process of the papal election will be like. “We went through this not too long ago, and the conclave convened,” he said. “People can understand what the process is, and then people will always be speculating about who the next pontiff will be.” Celano said …
