Route 22 to be One Lane Near Mountain Avenue

Restriction to implement NJDOT improvements to last about 50 days.

Short term improvements on Route 22 will continue Friday, as the highway goes down to one lane in a section of Bridgewater for about 50 days. According to a release from the Bridgewater Township Police Department, Route 22 East will be reduced to one lane between the New Jersey State Police Barracks and the Mountain Avenue entrance. This is expected to last for about 50 days. Green Construction Inc. is closing the right travel lane to through traffic. For an approximately 0.3-mile stretch, the section of the road will go from two lanes to one until mid June, unless the work is finished earlier. Condition of Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle Unknown

Minor was listed in critical condition after being struck on Route 22 Monday.

There is currently no update on the condition of the juvenile pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle on Route 22 West Monday morning, according to Bridgewater Township Police Lt. Al Nicaretta. The pedestrian was listed in critical condition after being brought to Morristown Memorial Hospital by Medevac helicopter following the collision that occurred around 7:45 a.m. Monday. Nicaretta also declined Tuesday to comment on the gender and age of the pedestrian. Bridgewater Township Police said in a release that Louis Bucci III was driving on Route 22 West just past the Route 202/206 overpass when he struck the pedestrian who was in the left lane. Juvenile in Critical Condition After Being Struck on Route 22

Flown to Morristown Memorial Hospital after being hit while walking in left lane.

A juvenile was in critical condition at Morristown Memorial Hospital after being struck by a car Monday while walking in the left lane of Route 22. Louis Bucci III was driving westbound under the Route 202/206 overpass at 7:45 a.m. when he struck the pedestrian in the left lane, Bridgewater Township Police said in a release. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital by Medivac helicopter, and was listed in critical condition. Police did not release the gender or age of the victim, or any further details beyond the news release, and did not return calls Tuesday morning. Traffic Signal System to be Installed on Route 22

It will be through Bridgewater, Green Brook, Watchung and more.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation is beginning a congestion relief project that will improve traffic on Route 22, from the area of Route 287 in Bridgewater to milepost 50.25 in Mountainside. This will include stretches of the road in Bridgewater, Bound Brook, Green Brook, North Plainfield, Watchung, Scotch Plains and Westfield. The project, scheduled to cost $7.77 million, is expected to improve mobility along the corridor with a system that will connects the 18 traffic signals in that area into one Controlled Traffic Signal System, according to a release from the NJDOT. No Injuries Reported in Milltown Road Crash

A car hit another that had pulled to the side of Route 22.

All parties refused medical attention after a vehicle struck a parked car on Route 22 West near Milltown Road Monday. According to North Branch Fire Chief David Hickson, a vehicle had pulled to the side of Route 22 to use a cell phone around 2:30 p.m. Another vehicle travelling west struck the parked car, he said. "Although both vehicles sustained major damage, all drivers and passengers refused medical attention," he said. Still, Hickson said, the North Branch Fire Company and Green Knoll Fire Company were called to the scene because of a stuck door. "The patient was not complaining of any injuries, but she could not get out of the car due to damage sustained by the accident," he said. Firefighters were able to get the door open quickly, …

Bound Brook Resident Killed in Route 22 Collision

The two-car accident occurred on Route 22 West early Thursday morning.

A Bound Brook resident was killed in a two-car motor vehicle accident on Route 22 West Thursday morning that shut down one lane for about four hours, according to a release from the Bridgewater Township Police Department. Esperanza Guardado, 45, was a passenger in one of the vehicles, and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to police, Manville resident Silvia Marin was driving her Honda Civic on Route 22 West in the area of North Adamsville Road when she lost control of her vehicle for unknown reasons and struck a Nissan being driven by Hasmukh Talsania, of Jersey City. Both vehicles left the roadway into the left shoulder, police said, and the Honda struck a tree. Guardado was a passenger in the Honda, and was pronounced dead at 6…

Route 22 Named ‘Most Dangerous Road’ in Somerset County

Four pedestrians were killed on the highway in two years.

Route 22 has been named the most dangerous road in Somerset County by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign (TSTC), based on data that shows four pedestrians were killed on the highway between 2010 and 2011. The seemingly most dangerous stretch of Route 22, based on the number of deaths, runs through Bridgewater in the vicinity of North Bridge Street to Adamsville Road, areas the New Jersey Department of Transportation is currently putting a focus on for its Route 22 improvements that will include better interchanges in the area of Route 287. Route 22 Improvements to Begin This Week

Most of the initial work will involve overnight lane closures.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation is preparing to begin its short-term improvements on the Route 22 corridor through Bridgewater and Somerville, with a plan to do the work mostly in the overnight hours. According to a release from the NJDOT, Green Construction Inc. is planning to begin preliminary construction activity this week, including sign installation and field mobilization. Available travel lanes will be maintained on Route 22 between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. during the week while construction continues. The work, the release said, is scheduled to be done with overnight lane closures and permanent shoulder closures that will include traffic shifts. Accidents Remain Steady Along Route 22 Corridor

Route 22 short-term improvements are being done to eliminate accidents.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation is planning a collection of short-term improvements for Route 22 through Bridgewater with a goal of improving safety and reducing accidents. Such improvements include closing the U-turns in the medians on Route 22, constructing a traffic light at the intersection of Foothill and Ronson roads and more, most of which are expected to be done in Spring 2014. These are the proposed projects in the short-term improvements: Most of these improvements are being done to reduce accidents along the Route 22 corridor. Driver Killed After Car Hits Concrete Bridge on Rt. 22

Hunterdon County man dies in Monday morning accident near Morgan Lane in Bridgewater.

A Hunterdon County man was killed Monday morning after his vehicle went off the roadway and struck a concrete bridge support on Route 22, Bridgewater Police said. Mark D'Agostino, 50, of Three Bridges, died following the crash that occurred just east of Morgan Lane at about 5:45 a.m. Police are still investigating the accident, and said it's unclear what caused D'Agostino's 2012 Toyota Corolla to leave the roadway. D'Agostino was taken to Somerset Medical Center by the Finderne Rescue Squad and Somerset Medical Center Mobile Intensive Care Unit paramedics, and was pronounced dead at 6:30 a.m., police said.
