American Coins & Gold opened next to Bloomingdale's in August.
With the value of gold and silver seemingly increasing by the day, one local business is looking to help customers cash in on the trend while it’s hot. American Coins & Gold, located just outside of Bloomingdale’s on the middle level of the Bridgewater Commons Mall, opened in its current location in August 2011 after starting out in Colorado. “I’m from New York, we just tried to move around and see how it works out,” said Teyelle Sebbera, co-owner of American Coins & Gold. “At first, we were a gold-buying kiosk, then we started finding out about coins and learning about coins. It started to become fun. It’s like a hobby now.” While American Coins & Gold will appraise all forms of silver and gold, and reward the people who bring them …

Economy has taken its toll on seasonal jobs, according to many local business owners.
With high unemployment rates and economic turmoil dominating news headlines, it is no secret that jobs have been hard to come by for the unemployed. For those looking to earn some extra cash in retail over the holidays, the outlook does not look much more promising than it has for the rest of the year throughout Somerset County. At a time of the year when some businesses would normally be looking to bring in employees to keep up with customer demand, many are not generating enough business to warrant paying for extra employee hours. One such case is Big Bang Music Shop. Located in Hillsborough, the musical instrument retailer has not yet seen a spike in holiday-related business, said manager Pete Westervelt. “Our level of business hasn’t …

Bridgewater Overhead Door is holding its annual campaign to raise funds for cancer.
It is a move both to honor a late owner and give back to those in need—and now, for the second year in a row, Bridgewater Overhead Door is hosting its annual “Doors for Hope Campaign.” The campaign, according to company marketing coordinator Gina Hector, began in November 2001 when company owner Anthony Veglatte decided to donate money to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. “Our late owner, John Veglatte, lost his battle to cancer on Nov. 25, 2009,” Hector said. “His son, Anthony who now heads the business, wanted to do something to honor his father’s memory.” Hector said Veglatte decided to hold the first campaign on the anniversary of his father’s death, and donated $25 to the hospital from the proceeds of every door sold. “He chose St. Jude…

Bridget's Irish Cottage in the Bridgewater Commons Mall sells all things Irish.
Bridget Lawn had been living in the United States for 15 years before she got the idea to open an Irish products business. “When I first came over here from Ireland, it was hard for me to find any of my food,” she said. “I used to take a ride to Canada to pick up different candy bars, and I love to play Irish music all the time. So I came up with the idea of having my own little place, bringing in my food and playing the music all day.” Having lived in Bridgewater for some time already, she had found a storefront location in Martinsville. But when the 90,0000-square-foot Bridgewater Commons Mall opened in 1989, Lawn was one of the first in line for an opportunity to sell her wares. The day the mall opened, Lawn had her own kiosk. “St. …

Bridgewater-based interior designer Myles Albert brings an old school approach to design excellence.
Bridgewater resident Myles Albert has two sayings in his interior design business called Interior Excellence. “Without women I would be unemployed, and thank God for the market that has the means to use my services," he said. Women, Albert said, are usually the key decision-makers in home renovation and design, and the high-end market as always been a rich one for interior design services. But at this point, Albert, a Bridgewater-based interior design and renovation specialist, might be considering adding another saying: “think warm.” “Thirty-two years ago I moved to San Diego to get away from the cold,” Albert said. “During my time there, I met a girl from Edison and we returned to have a family here.” Fast forward 32 years and two …
