Crime Rises Slightly in First Month of Year

New tool from State Police offers a snapshot of recent crime reporting.

January was a little busier than normal for local police according to a New Jersey State Police crime report from January 2013 that said crime was up about 15 percent from January 2012. Fortunately, in Bridgewater, not all types of crime had increased, but the focus was on simple assaults and theft. Consider the 100 percent increase in simple assaults reported, year over year—it was 7 in 2012 and 14 in 2013. Larceny thefts increased by about 18 percent, from 45 in January 2012 to 53 in January 2013. In Bridgewater, all other forms of crime either decreased or remained about the same, and forcible entry burglaries actually decreased by 22 percent, from 9 incidents reported to 7. And motor vehicle thefts actually decreased by about 67 …

No Injuries in Truck Fire on 287

Traffic was being diverted to exit 13A.

No injuries were reported in an accident on Route 287 that caused a truck fire around noon Friday, state police said. Traffic was being diverted off Route 287 north because of a truck fire in the area of Chimney Rock Road Friday afternoon, police said. Police said there was a truck fire called in around 12 p.m. around Chimney Rock Road, and it closed three lanes in the area of exit 14 on the northbound side. According to state police, the truck hit the median, but there were no injuries. Traffic was diverted to exit 13A until about 3 p.m. after the accident was cleared. State police are continuing to investigate the incident. Patch will update as more information is available.

Woman Stable After Airlifted From I-78 Wreck

Hunterdon County resident was trapped for more than three hours before extricated.

A 32-year-old Hunterdon County woman who was trapped inside her vehicle for hours after it rolled over on Interstate 78 was listed in stable condition on Wednesday. Carly Johnstone, of Milford, was airlifted to Morristown Medical Center Tuesday night at about 6:40 p.m., after her vehicle crashed near mile-marker 34 of I-78 westbound more than three hours earlier, State Police said. The Liberty Corner Fire Co. extricated Johnstone from the vehicle, according to Liberty Corner Chief Marc Friedman. According to New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. Adam Grossman, firefighters spent several hours working on getting her freed from the vehicle, during which time westbound lanes were closed, causing an 8-mile backup. Grossman said the accident, …

Six Firearms Seized After Bedminster Manhunt

Flemington man found at the Trump National Golf Club had three rifles and other weapons, police said.

The Flemington man found Wednesday after a manhunt that ended at the Trump National Golf Club had, in his possession, six firearms when he was taken into custody, according to NJ State Police Sgt. Adam Grossman. Daryl Haluszczak, 29, was charged by the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office with unlawful possession of weapons and possession of weapons for an unlawful purpose when he was arrested. Grossman said Haluszczak was found in possession of three rifles, two shotguns and one other firearm that was not identified. "But that is still an active investigation," he said. UPDATE: I-78 Crash Hospitalizes Bridgewater Man

Police said box truck hit rear of car, causing accident.

Bridgewater resident William Page was taken to Somerset Medical Center after the four-door sedan he was driving eastbound on I-78 was hit form behind by a box truck, state police said. The accident occurred at about 6:45 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-78 just past the King George exit. Police said both vehicles spun out of controlbefore coming to a rest on a guardrail.  Page complained of back and neck pain and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The eastbound lane had been blocked following the accident. Police issued traffic alerts to reduce congestion in the area.

Armed Man Flees Crash, Caught After Manhunt, Prosecutor Says

29-year-old Flemington resident apprehended following search near Trump National Golf Club.

An armed 29-year-old Flemington man was apprehended Wednesday morning after taking weapons from a Hunterdon County home, crashing his vehicle on Interstate 78 and leading authorities on a manhunt near Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, officials said. Daryl Haluszczak has been charged by the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office with unlawful possession of weapons and possession of weapons for an unlawful purpose. Additional charges may be filed by the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office. According to a statement released Wednesday afternoon by Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony Kearns III, Haluszczak took weapons from a Readington Township home he was house-sitting while the residents were on vacation. Major Crash Causes Backups on I-78

Police say Medevac helicopter called to the scene early Wednesday morning.

State Police at Perryville barracks on Wednesday morning released preliminary information on a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 78 westbound in Bedminster Township that resulted in early-morning backups. State police said the crash occurred around 5:45 a.m. on milepost 29.6 along the highway. No further information was released on the condition of the vehicle's occupant or occupants. The accident remains under investigation, according to police. Further information is expected to be released later on Wednesday. Traffic was flowing freely as of shortly after 9 a.m., following previous backups, state police said.

UPDATE: Motorcyclist Still in Surgical ICU

A Brooklyn man is still in the surgical intensive care unit at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital after a motorcycle accident on Route 287 Sunday evening. Edwin Rivera, 42, is still at the hospital, according to a representative from Robert Wood Johnson, after he suffered critical injuries to his extremities in the accident that occurred at about 7:30 p.m. According to New Jersey State Trooper Christopher Kay, there is no further information about the cause of the accident itself. What is known at this point, Kay said, is that Rivera was driving his motorcycle at speeds exceeding the speed limit when a white Hyundai entered his lane. UPDATE: Motorcyclist in Critical Condition After 287 Crash

The Brooklyn man sustained injuries to his extremities.

A Brooklyn man is in critical condition after he lost control of his motorcycle while driving on Route 287 at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, according to an article on mycentraljersey.com. Edwin Rivera, 42, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick after sustaining injuries to his extremities, according to the article. The article said that Rivera was driving in the left lane at speeds exceeding the speed limit when a white Hyundai entered his lane from the middle lane. Rivera, the article said, lost control of the motorcycle, which then struck a metal guardrail around mile marker 16.6. The southbound side of Route 287 in Bridgewater was shut down after state police received the call about the accident, and remained closed …

I-287 Clear After Morning Oil Spill

The road is no longer slick.

The Department of Transportation and Hazmat teams were called out after a tractor trailer overturned on Route 287 in Bridgewater, spilling diesel fuel on the roadway around 5:30 a.m. Thursday. State police are currently still investigating the accident, but said that the road has since been cleared. According to state police, the DOT spread sand along the roadway to make it less slick, and a Hazmat team cleaned up the spilled diesel fuel. The roadway is completely clear at this point, and there are no driving issues at this time, police said.
