Girls Lacrosse Begins New Season With New Coach

The girls team adjusts to life without its longtime coach and key players, all while working to remain a force in the state.

As the weather starts to slowly turn and thaw from a long cold winter the tracks, fields and diamonds at and around Basilone Field at have awakened to a fledgling springs sports season. In this preview, we look at the girls lacrosse team.

OVERVIEW

The Panthers begin the new season with a new coach after longtime leader Kathie DeBonis stepped aside to take an interim assistant principal position at the middle school. Taking over for DeBonis is her assistant and protege Lydia Pinto.

LAST SEASON'S RESULTS

The girls lacrosse team won both the Somerset county and Skyland Conference Delaware Division championships in 2010.

KEEP AN EYE ON

  • Kelly Fenton, center (Junior), team captain, a third team All-State selection and a member of the all-conference team.
  • Danielle Iandiorio, defender (Senior), team captain, will patrol the Panthers back end.
  • Stephanie Umbach, defender (Senior), team captain, will team with Iandiorio to key team's defense.
  • Christine Germaske, attacker (senior), will team with sister Lynn to key Panthers scoring punch.
  • Lynn Germaske, attacker (senior), along with sister Christine will be counted on to help provide offense for Bridgewater.

THEY WILL MISS

  • Lauren Sbrilli, a first team All-State selection who finished her high school career as the state's No. 3 all-time goal scorer. Sbrilli is a freshman with the Rutgers University lacrosse team.
  • Carlee Dragon, a three time all-conference and all-county selection. Dragon is now a freshman on the CW Post lacrosse team at Long Island University.
  • Kathy DeBonis, coach, in her 14 years as the head coach for the girls lacrosse team she compiled 225 victories, a state title and multiple sectional titles.
